I need shocks for my '73 Trans Am. The car has all stock suspension components. I am debating between Bilstein's and KYB's. I have heard that the KYB's are firmer, but no one can really tell me how the ride quality and handling are between the two different brands. Are the Bilstiens worth $280 vs. $120 for the KYB's?

Also, the Bilstein's list different shocks for the front for '70-'76 (36mm) vs. the '77-'81 (46mm). I was wondering why you can't use the 46mm on the '70-'76, and how hard it would be to make them fit?

That would be a no brainer. Get the Bilsteins. KYB's are just ok and they are a cheap shock. If you want shocks that will give you great performance, it is a no brainer.

Chris, what is your opinion on the Koni shocks?

I'm in the same boat, I put on a set of Monroe HD gas units but not that impressed by the performance. I'd like to upgrade but not sure if Edelbrock IAS are as good as the hype would indicate. Everyone seems to be happy with them but unless you owned a set of really good shocks you have nothing to compare to.

Not sure you could get much better than Koni's. Might be a bit much for the street, but for racing, not sure you could do better. Them being expensive is the only real drawback.

I have the Edelbrock IAS shocks on my 75' GA. I really like them so far. They work as advertised. Stiff when they need to be and compliant when they need to be, what a concept!

There you go, another satisfied Edelbrock man, I am really tempted to go that route now. Have you used Konis or Bilsteins before? My wife's BWM has Bilsteins and they are very impressive shocks, just right for sporty handling. A lot of that is probably BWM suspension design techique but still it's very nice. I have very little experience with shock/spring mods so I'm having to learn it as I go, trying not to waste money.

I had a set of Bilsteins on my 81' T/A WS6. They were also great shocks, stiff, but didn't work quite as slick as the Edelbrocks.

I like the HAL shock (QA-1 now, I think). 12 way adjustable, so you can set them to work with whatever spring rate youre using. That allows for spring control without being overly harsh. And as they wear, just add a click. Rebuildable as well.

I'm running the KYB's right now and I have to say for the money they're not bad. The car has a firmer ride than the old monroes that were on it. If you're not looking for a high performance shock, these aren't bad.

My other life has meaning....

I looked at this website. The Bilsteins only listed shocks for 68-69 Friebirds. Aren't the 67's the same as the 68-9??
