I had a similar problem with my 389 tri-power.
It would always start cold, when hot it wouldn't
even turn over. After new battery, rebuilt starter,heat shield and then a high torque starter,I still had the problem. It was a wire going to the alternator that was almost broken in two.I replaced the wire and Voila, it starts fine now.
