I'm trying to decide on which carb to buy,the the performer rpm quadrajet (850 cfm) or one of the Jet stage 2 or 3 Quadrajet (750 cfm). It's going on a .030 400, 6x #4 ported heads.Has any one used either of these carbs?

I have used the Edelbrock 850's...like em alot..although they are made for chevy's fuel outlet & linkage wise.
Have not used Jet stage 2's. Have used RAIV Pontiac quadrajets. Your question really needs more info from you to be answered correctly, but I DO like the E-850's they run well and have good off-idle performance.

Your car will perform better with a 750 over the 850. Again bigger is just that, not faster.
How do you like that cam? I'm considering that grind in my 455. |

Thanks for the input Tim,Would you suggest the JET stage 2 or 3? As for the cam,I'm very pleased with it,It has pleanty of low end torq and pulls hard threw 6k.I've got the stock quadrajet on it now,it runs decent but leans out on the upper end and the the throttle shaft needs bushings. Any suggestions on someone to rebuild this carb, or would I be better off to buy one of the JET carbs?

I'm personally a Holly man. Nothing wrong with the Q- jets, I'm just so use to Hollys. Check fuel pump. A Carter Machanical makes a big differance. I would learn how to rebuild your oun carb. It's great to know and not depend on others when you need it fixed NOW.
Buy a good book with lots of pictures on rebuilding your carb. |

R&R,
Try getting Doug Roe's book titled, "Rochester Carburetors". The book has a lot of good tips on how to rebuild and tune the Q-Jet. I had a guy near me, Jim McGowan (e-mail ) from Rockford, IL. disassemble, clean and rebush the throttle shafts on a base plate for a '70 GTO carb (#7040264). It cost me $75, including shipping. I haven't built the carb yet, but there is no play in the shafts; they were pretty sloppy before. A rebuild kit costs about $20 and a new float runs about $10. Edlebrock Q-Jet primary rods and jets, secondary rods, accelerator pump, power piston springs and needles and seats (all available from Summit) are direct bolt-ins for the stock Rochester stuff (pre-'75). You could redo your own carb for less than $130, including the base plate rebuild. And as Tim said, you'd be able to fix it yourself if the need ever arose. As for your lean out, try a little fatter secondary rod. Don't know what you have now, but Doug Roe's book has all the listings and sizes of Q-Jet primary and secondary rods. Also, there are several good carb rebuilders who post in these forums (carbking is one who comes to mind) who may be able to take care of your worn throttle shaft problem. The Q-Jet is easy to rebuild, it just takes a little time and patience. Hope this helps. [ May 09, 2002, 10:26 PM: Message edited by: goathead68 ] |

Thanks guys, rebuilding the carb is not a problem, the throttle shafts are in bad need of bushings and would prefer someone else to have that fun! There's alotof slop in them! I'll send an e-mail to that shop goathead, thanks! Tim, I've never had much luck with holleys! I've got a new 750 double pumper on the bench that I finally got sick of messing with and put the old quad back on. I've always prefered a good quadrajet for the street,Iknow alot of people who swear by holley,I just haven't figured them out yet!

If you want to stick with your Q-jet and are interested in the Jet carbs, you don't have to buy one from Jet outright. You can send them your carb and they will rework it for you, which will help on costs a little bit. Also, for the do-it-yourselfer, Jet sells the bushing kit along with the correct reamer to rebush your throttle shafts. I'd put the Holley on it, but that's just my two cents. Plus, I couldn't properly tune a Q-jet if my life depended on it!

www.jetchip.com and click on the 'fuel systems' link. The bushing kit costs $85.71, not including shipping. The also sell tuning kits for Q-Jets and Holleys.
