I have found the six numbers and engine code on the front right side of the 1965 GTO engine block. How do I know if these are the correct numbers to match with the VIN?

NO, those numbers DO NOT match the vin. The are engine production (unit) #'s only. The 65 engine does not have the vin stamped on it. The only place you will find that # is on the original Protect o Plate (warranty book). You will be lucky if it is still with the car. Otherwise, if the date code on the block is reasonable close (within a few weeks before the build date of the car) you can assume that is the engine that came in the car if the code on the block matches up with the tranny and carburation, but you still can't be 100% sure. Even with PHS. Have I got you confused yet?
