I just bought a 68 Firebird with a Powerslide
transmission. I have a TH400 I want to install.
What mounting parts are the same, what will I need
to procur?

You'll need:
A turbo 400 cross member, turbo 400 transmission mount, turbo 400 yoke, and an appropriate torque converter. You'll also have to shorten your driveshaft. Your powerglide shifter will work fine, but the shifter will not line up with the PRNDS shift indicators. You can buy the correct indicator lens. In order for the kickdown to work you will need either an original or aftermarket switch. The tranny will work fine without it. That is something you can add later. If you are having the turbo 400 rebuilt, now is a good time to add a trans cooler.

What rick said. I did this to my 67 convert when I first got it in 1977. Was an interesting task for a 17 yr old kid in his folks drive way. Transmission fluid was no fun lieing in under the hot Fla sun either. YUCK!!! Not too difficult of a task either. Just take your time. Along with Rick's comments you might think about changing the metal lines to braded ones. Connect them to the trany before you put in in the car. Then connnect them to a cooler/radiator. Makes life simpler. You will also need a new dipstick/tube if one didn't come with the tranny. The powrslide and the TH400 are very different. Good luck and have fun

Honest dad, that 455 on the side of the block is a serial number

Thanks for the quick reply Rick. I have the torque
converter,yoke and his/hers shifter. Guess I'll
just need the cross member and transmission mount.
The TH400 was offered on the Firebirds I believe.
Should be able to find the correct driveshaft.

You're welcome. Yes, the turbo 400 was an option. You may want to consider having your driveshaft shortened (cheaper). It is not as scary as it sounds. Look in your yellow pages. Most machine shops do it. In fact, have it balanced and new U-joints put in it while you're at it and you will be done. Even though stock driveshafts were different between powerglides and the 400's, your drive shaft will be adequate for any application except an "extreme" motor.

Ps. Do not get a solid tranny mount! Get an original rubber one or you can go with the polyurethane/polygraphite mounts if you prefer.

You should have a Super Turbine 300 trans, not a Powerglide and they both have electric kickdown. So just plug the plug on the drivers side of the trans.

I have a 67 bird with a 326 and a 2-speed automatic, how can I determine if it's a 300 superturbine or the powerglide?

My other problem...

Currently we rebuilt the motor and added new Edelbrock manifold and carb., but the original motor had an electronic type plug/button thing on the manifold behind the carb. when the throttle was completly open it would hit... (passing gear setup) well is there an after market kit for this to fit my new manifold and carb?

"Powerglide" trannies were a Chevy 2=speed unit, with a Chevy bellhousing pattern.

"Super Turbine 300" trannies are the 2-speeds for Buick-Olds-Pontiac, with that bellhousing.

I understand wanting to install the TH400, but a TH350 fits where the ST300 was, using the same crossmember and driveshaft. Only difference is the kickdown is cabled instead of electric. I've done a few and you won't have a shifter detent for the extra gear, but you can live without that, or swap in a three-speed shifter of some sort.

But for the TH400, yes they were available, so you can find a crossmember and driveshaft that already works.

If you have the TH400, and are going to use that, there is a kit you can buy for pretty cheap that will convert your 2 speed shifter and indicator to a 3 speed set up. http://www.shiftworks.com/firebird.htm you'll find all you need.

And the TH 400 also uses a wire for the kickdown switch, and you can get an aftermarket set up through Jegs or Summit. I think Edelbrock makes one? Or better yet, you could get a stock set up from a junk yard from most big car Pontiacs etc...

And then the TH400 crossmember (you can get new or used) and the driveshaft. TH400 has a larger yolk, and the shaft is shorter. May be able to find the right size used also, or get yours reworked for under $100.

But Glenn is right, the TH350 is a more direct swap. I just like the TH400 better myself.
