I have found a 66 GTO convertible that I love, however, it is an Auto. I would like to convert to a manual. My question is how hard is that to do? Brake pedal assembly, bell housing, trans, drive shaft?....Has anyone done it? Where is good place to get parts? Online guides? Please help.

Well first of all if its an original auto! I would keep it that way..but if you want to change over you are in for alot of part finding...pedal assmbly with z bar and bracket, bell housing, flywheel.trans, shifter, clutch and not sure if the consol is the same if so a shifter plate and boot, drive shaft and yolk......the actual work isnt that bad its the parts and $$$$. I just saw a manual pedal assm on ebay.what auto trans is in there now?.....th400 yolk will match an m22....and if you use an m21 youll need and th350 or power glide yolk...any questions email me [email protected]

You also have to weld the countershaft mounting tab to the frame. I don't believe that the auto cars got them.

Plus, there is also the convertible (boxed) frame/auto. transmission crossmember location issue. It can be done, though. Like GTO John said, just lotsa parts chasing and planning.

Will any GM, chevy, etc. pedal assembly for that year be compatible? It seems that through ebay and my parts books that everything is readily available.

I am doing the same conversion with my 67 Tempest. I am using the motor and trans. from my 70 Firebird. I have the pedals, z-bar, and clutch rod for a Tempest that I have acquired from ebay and people I have found on the internet. I am using the shifter, bell housing and Saginaw trans. from the Firebird and I have to get the z-bar bracket which I know is available at Ames, but my question is,... With the motor out, how do I know where to weld the bracket for the z-bar? It will be so much easier to weld with the motor out.
Thanks

Not sure about the zbar bracket on the gto but some other gm cars of the same era had the bracket bolted on to the frame with three bolts...

I have been told, and it may be wrong, but, in 1966 the bracket was bolted on, and in 1967, the z-bar bracket is welded, either way, it will be much easier with the motor out. There are no mounting holes in the frame, unfortunately.

My 67's (both) are welded on. you guys can E-mail me if you need dimensions for the location. If the body and upper control arms are on your car, I can use those for reference points to measure off of mine. My front ends are removed, also. [email protected]

The '66 is also welded on. The body is of my '66, if you need measurements, let me know!

I remember doing one years ago, I think you'll still need to pull the inner fender to weld the tab on. It goes on the outside of the frame, and you can't get there with the inner fender on, unless you want to notch the inner fender. (I've seen this done also, does look very nice, but you can't see it unless you're looking up under through the wheelwell or looking real close down under the hood). Good luck with your conversion. I was lucky as I had purchased a complete 4 speed parts car! (This was about 15 years ago)

Thank you all, TriPower 455 your e-mail was helpful. I have to get the bracket and then pics will help. I don't want to make a mistake. I will save your e-mail addresses for the future.

Z-bar frame brackets were welded on A-body frames till '68 A-bodys then they were bolted on.

For a '66 GTO or LeMans:
pedals...'64-66 A-body ('67's are different)
Z-bar...'64-66 V8 LeMans
bellhousing...stock or SFI blowshield
flywheel... stock or steel
big rod from pedal... '64-66 Pontiac A-body
throwout arm adj rod... HD MrGasket
throwout arm...good unworn stock (not aftermarket)
shifter porch...'65-66 A-body
Shifter..whatever you can afford...
Nice console, see shifter...
