Question: how does the hood-to-cowl seal install? Does it slip on the front edge of the grille behind the hood? Which side goes up? Any help would be appreciated.

Yup - It slips on to the front edge of the cowl with the fatter half round edge up. It may make the rear of your hood stay up a little but it should eventually break in and settle down.

Phil is correct, it slips under the cowl edge. There is a raised lip on the front edge of the cowl. The seal slips under the raised lip and is held in place once you tighten the small screws that hold the cowl.
