Hello Everyone, Is there a correct way of removing the universal joints out of my driveshaft on my 1966 GTO? Can they be pressed out? These things look like they've been in there a long time. I don't want to beat them to death just getting them out and damage the driveshaft. Any tricks or ideas? Thanks!.........Gary

Well if they are origional they probably are set in there with an injected plastic of some type, i find the easy way to tell is to look for some little holes with plastic **** sticking outa them, althoe im not shure if they did them this way back in 66 or not. If they are thoe you can take a propane torch to them and heat the area around the U-Joint cap, this will cause the plastic to get hot and come squirting out the little holes and you can just tap the u-joint caps out, and clean it all up and reinstall new ones.
If on the other hand they have ever been replaced its best to put them in a press and just push em out, or in a vice with a socket that is a little smaller than the bearing cap, just insert it on the cap and put it in the Vice and twist away and is should slide out slowly.
Then there is the old socket and hammer method which i like cuz you get to relieve some frustration and use that big ass hammer that you never get to use. Just elevate the shaft a bit underneath the joint, and put a socket that is a bit smaller than the joint cap and wack away with the hammer till it starts pressing the cap on the other side out, continue to wack and it will eventually pop out the cap then work the joint out and pop the other cap out. Easy as pie.
Oh if its got retainer clips on it remove them with a pair of needle nose pliers.
When reinstalling be shure to take a little bit of grease and put it in the New joint caps to hold the needle bearings in place when you go to beating them back on, if one falls over and you smack it your screwed, have to get a needle outa the old joint, or get a new joint if you mess the needles up, just be careful and it will all go well. Its not a hard thing to do.
If there is any thing i missed im shure some one will chime in.
Mike

remove clips holding caps in. suspend the joint edges across the jaws of the bench vise. lubricate with PB blaster, then hit with hammer on suspended portion whichever it is, the yoke or the shaft.

Gary, LouisianaGuy covered most of the bases. If you do have to heat out the plastic wear safety glasses. Have had a couple of the units spit/pop the material out.If you do heat them out allow the metal to cool as you can bend the metal if you try to press or hammer them out of the hot units.Once the old joints are out apply a thin layer of grease on the Yoak and Driveshaft openings, this will allow the new cups to slide into the assy. much easier. Also use Joints with grease fittings and be sure to install the joint so the fitting is in the proper direction so you can grease it on the car with the shaft installed. Double check your clips before you install the driveshaft and pivot both ends of shaft. If any of the joints are tight you may have dropped a bearing inside the cap. Don't forget to grease the new units.

I made a "U" shaped jig outta some 1/2" x 2" flat bar that works damn good for supporting the trunions while ya' pound them out.
There's some pretty good pics of one in most Chilton manuals, refering to removing universals.
