Ok,Im about ready to start reassembly of "Dr Evil"(motors name LOL) And I have a quick question..I have a Crower Solid Flat Tappet cam,but I see some really good runnin 455s with a HYD camshaft ie Jeff Kinsler,H.I.S and others.I also keep hearing about wiped out lobes, oiling problems and such with the solid cams.Which is better and the least probability of having a problem? The cam I have now is 256/265..560/.595 on a 110.Now this is going in a 3800 lb 4door ventura with Fully ported 6x d ports,1.6rr, a victor intake and a dominator,9.8 to 1 compression and a 250 hit of the gas.Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Roger
PS Anything not listed I am open to suggestions....

Roger,

That's a mighty fine cam. Seems you can plug & play. Would suggest 450HP to 550HP is within that cam's profile.

Just me talkin:
I'd consider the 1.5 RR during the full-engine break-in period. Also, would consider you try a basic Q-Jet and intake during break-in and run-in to avoid wet-down and other rich-running scenarios.

I had a terrible time trying to get the DOM/Torker I to run on my already solid Q-Jet/Torker...with a similar cam to yours.

Easily admitted, the Roller cams are better for Street/Strip, but personally won't fess the dollars for the roller Lifters, cam, and possibly springs. Apparently my heads would accomodate..

I have no experience or advice on lobe-wipings, or reliability ills from Solids. Somebody else can type on that.

You;re gonna tap 250 HP of NOS..is another point that I'm not going to type on..Hmmm about 700HP to 800HP out of your Gass combo. How's the block lookin?

The block has been filled and studded,So you like the Solid Crower with the specs I listed? Also can I use any solid lifter,Comp Cams # is the same for a SB Chevy.Or should I spend the extra money for the cool face lifters.Im running Crans 99838 Springs should I remove the inner spring for break in?
Thanks,
Roger

Whatever ya do, don't use Chevy lifters. I ran em on a small base circle solid cam and ruined the lifter bores after 1 race season. Get a real Pontiac lifter with the high oil band.

...so a little oil hole makes a cool-face huh.
I suspect the oil drool from around the lifter bore, cam bearings, and head drainback is cool face enough.

Back in the dawn of my day, my 68LeMans (155,000miles)had some dished lifters. Evidently wore down enough to expose a little hole in the lifter bases...those were cool-face lifters.

not

Roger,

Sounds like a good choice of cams to me too. Definetly use a pontiac solid lifter only. I am currently building a solid roller set up for my new combo, but the old hyd. cam is sitting there just in case.LOL.
Good luck with the combo and let us know when its at the track.
See ya
