I was trying to set the timing on my 67 400, and when I disconnected the hose for the vaccum advance the engine immediately cut off. Why?
Hey are you ready to go, got the top turned down on my GTO. Come on,let's all jump in, gonna take this car for a little spin!!

First thought is that the static distributor timing is set so far retarded that the vacuum advance itself pulled the timing far enough to get the engine running.

It is possible for the wire going to your points to be broken and only touch with vacuum or without vacuum but not both. That is rare, though. Most likely it is as the earlier poster said - idle speed is not set high enough for your initial mechanical timing setting (with no vacuum advance.) You could try raising your idle speed a little before pulling the hose off. Then set your timing, then connect the vacuum hose again, then set your idle speed to your liking.
