I have a question, I'm just finishing my "fresh-up" on my race 455 and have a question regarding valve lash for my solid cam. Ultradyne recommends a lash setting of .026 (hot), but what should it be cold? When I first put this motor together I still set them at .026 (cold) any opinions? Thanks in advance.

I would just set them at .026 cold for starters. Once you get the motor hot, measure the clearance on the intake and exhaust. The difference between your cold lash and the lash you have now hot will give the difference between the cold setting lash and the hot lash: i.e. if you have .024 hot then you know that .028 should be your cold setting. Anyway, what the cam manufacturer recommends is just a suggested initial setting, you can play with lash for tuning. With my cam Crower says I can use .016 to .030.

Rule of thumb is if they recommend .026 you add .002 if your setting them cold, so set them at .028, and do the same for both intake and exhaust. At the track you can play but never go more the .010 under what the recommended setting calls for. At the track do the intake first, if you don't pick up
any ET, then try the exhaust.

I always wondered why they called for setting lash hot. Iknow that's because that's with everything at temp amd expanded for correct clearances. But even if you are FAST at setting them by the time you get to last cylinder motor has cooled considerably so not as accurate a setting as the first ones.

With out challenging Gach, I set my E-heads .005 tighter. When the motor warms up I usually only need to readjust a few valves.

Has anyone else noticed that the lash (after being set a cople of times) says the same on the drivers side but always is loose on the pass side. Or is this cause I'm lefthanded?
