Picking up a Ford 9" rear axle from a co-worker this week, problem is it doesnt have the center section. It has Strange axles and I am looking at Strange gear case and Richmond gears from Summit. What all do I need to get this thing ready to have assembled, know very little about rears. Using tax refund to get the machining done on the 400. After a long winter of waiting I'm back to piecing this thing together.

You will need to know how many splines the axles have so you can get either a posi unit or a spool to put the gears on. You will also need an installation kit that will have the bearings, crush sleeve, shims, seals, ring gear bolts, and a gasket.

I also see in the Jegs catalog they have a 9" Ford carrier package that has everything you need except the gears. I'm sure Summit also has them but they probably just don't show them in their catalog. Only problem is it comes with a spool and not a posi unit unless that's what you are looking for.

The easiest way to go is to get one already assembled and ready to bolt in. Several companies can put one together for you with whatever you want in them.

Thanks Probrd
Looking in my Jegs "wish book" now, (what mom called the X-mas catalogs when I was a kid). A friend of mine thinks he can find a used one locally but I want everything new on this. Only problem is $$$$. Guess I'll put off on the engine machine work again, wont do any good sittin in the house anyway.

Bob try this place --- http://www.ring-pinion.com/

I bought a third member from them a year ago, no problems with it. It came ready to bolt in. I went with a Detroit locker, 3.89s, and the stronger case, cost was less then jegs or summit.

Email me if you wanna know more.

One more problem though. Mating the Ford 9 to a Pontiac driveshaft. Do I need the Ford yoke on the driveshaft, Or have Center section built to fit withe GM, or is this even an issue?

Bob--
You should be able to get a u-joint that fits both. I got one from Napa to adapt a GM driveshaft to a Mopar rearend.

Buy a daytona pinion support with that aftermarket Nodular case & you should be alright.

Colorado bill pegged it on the u-joint. Ford will be Spicer 1350, GTO will be Spicer 1330...or you can have driveshaft built up with Spicer 1350 ends.

Called Randy's today. Thanks again Jason, they seemed really knowlegable and great to deal with. Was a little more $ then I expected but want the best of everything. Getting the aluminum Daytona pinion support, thinking 4.11 gears over the 3.90, forged 4140 steel yoke, Detroit Locker.thought my rear would be here by now, want to see if it has 31 spline axles. Gonna go ahead with this set up, will hold up better than what I had in mind at first, (buying a used one).

I saw an ad today in National Dragster for Danny Miller's Rear Gears. They have ready to bolt in 9" third members with Auburn 28 or 31 spline posi unit with your choice in gears for $845. Might give them a call if your interested at 636-861-3900.
