Hi all, I've read pros and cons on here about Omni line of ppg. I used some this weekend on the latest project. I used the Omni MTK urethane to paint the trunk compartment (underside of deck lid and jamb) and I really liked it. It sprayed well, covered nice and has a nice gloss. It was thinner, but it also didn't need to be reduced before spraying, just add hardener. I didn't want to break the bank on jamb paint and this really fit the bill. Bought two quarts of paint and 16 oz of hardener for about 70 bucks. I'll try to post a picture this week.

You hit it on the head-thinner. I shot it 4 or 5 times and moved up from it. Had coverage issues and found myself using more material and time. Sounds like you're happy and got out cheap for $70. Bring on the pic's!

I agree ,Omni gets a bad rap because it is not included in PPGs guaranteed product lines but if your not an approved shop its not guaranteed anyway.Also by doing that it doesnt have to fall under the same epa guidelines ,which makes it easier to use.

OK, here's a picture of how the paint turned out on the FB trunk with the Omni paint. I also threw in a couple pictures of the GTO that I just got done.

I've used the Omni one time on a Honda Civic and got great results--almost NO orange peel. The best part was in the jams and channels--the spray that went through the cracks (between hood and fender) had a shine, too. The only cautions I would mention are that it is more likely to run if you are too agressive with the gun, and it doesn't cure as quickly as the more expensive PPG or Dupont top-of-the-line paints.

Yes it looks OK after you spray it. Now come back in 5 years and let me know its doing. My 72 has just been torn apart so I can paint it again. The cost is not that far from a good paint since you have to spray twice as much.
9 coats of silver is a long time in the booth.

One other thing. Repair a scratch in it, Good luck. It is not worth it unless you plan on turning the car soon.

Don't get me wrong, the GTO is painted in PPG DBU. I am not advising using the Omni on the outside of the car. For the FB, I will use DBC on the outside, but I feel the Omni fits the bill for use on jambs, undertrunk, etc. where it will not see the harsh UV conditions from sunlight or have the potentials for scratches and weather. I have never used the Omni on the outside of a car so I can't say how it will hold up under those conditions.

Sorry, I should have read a little deeper. The Omni in my trunk and jambs still looks fine. it is just the outside thats trashed.

I had shot nothing but B/C for 10 years and got this hair up my butt that I wanted a single stage for the 72. This is what my PPG dealer recomended.

The 86 GP is about to get shot with DBU/2021

The paint on my 69 bird right now is Omni.
There really isn't anything wrong with the paint, other then it's transparency issues.
As long as a person plans for this, and orders extra base to compensate.
Then shooting it is no big deal.

Limco Hi-solids 2k clear

Painted my buddy Mikes 67 Chevelle 3 years ago, used D.B.U. and Limco clear, because We forgot to bring the clear with us to my Dad's shop.

The only thing the local paint jobber had was the Limco.
$75.00 for a gallon of clear, catalyst, and reducer.

It was a pain to rub ( partly because I waited 6 months)

But the gloss and depth are amazing..

3 years so far, no yellowing or delaminating.
And very easy and forgiving to spray.

I havent in fact I almost prefer it .the epoxy non sanding primer bites in to the metal very well and the urethane primer sands better than k36

That's great, I've already primed it and I sure as heck didn't want to remove it. Thanks for the info!
