Default OLD-SCHOOL?

Tom, never saw the 2400CFM Single, I expect they ported it until the outside of the Mainbody dissapeared... LOL

Seems like Company's were more interested in learning, & going to the next level then, vs just making the dollar.

BTW I did witness a stock 1050 3 BBL put on an early 427 Chevy, (Corvette)& w/no tuning it promptly picked up 50 H.P. Everyone yawned, then we had lunch.

Here is a pic of the original box, the smaller stock-950's came in, I got my stash too...(see photo) boy what a flashback...

The 2400 cfm carbs were special sand castings NO PORTING NECESSARY!

The throttle blades were 2.75 inches in diameter

Each barrel flowed a real 600 cfm.

The carbs were specifically designed for PRO STOCK which at the
time was SB engines. Wally Booth tested the carbs.

The intake was an Individual Runner deal. No Plenum.

I regretted that Holley (aftermarket) moved to Tennessee and
Borg Warner bought the OEM production side. Still have some friends who work for BW today.

I've got one of the 1050 3-bbl's I bought in 80" or 81",guy had a RA-V in a 68" camaro, Wanted a lot of money, or so I thought, for the engine stuff, but did'nt know much about carbs. I asked what cfm the 3bbl was, he said 650, 750, 850, depends on how you jet it!!!!!-got it for $25, was like new! Wish I had more money then, he wanted $400 for a 428" RA-V block w/factory splayed caps!! Needed a sleeve, but was (and STILL is) the only block like that I have ever seen!-Think his name was Klien, in the Westland Mi area.-Bob.

Theres one on ebay now at 21.83 with 5 days left.. I paid alot for mine still under 300.00 but it was only bolted down one time for a very short period.. The only way i could of gotten a better example was to find a nos unit.. The coloring on mine is perfect and you cant even tell a nut/bolt was run down on the base plate iam assuming mine was bolted down because of possible gasket residue on the bottom.

I would like to get a set of those fang looking secondary squirters myself.

The "Fang style shooters can be easily made with some small diameter tubing, a bender, and a spare shooter.

You would have to drill a pair of holes in the divider between the two
sections of the carb airhorn.

The front is EXACTLY the same as an 850 double pumper carb. 425
(4 bbl) cfm in the front.

Food for thought:

Many years ago, Marty Palbykin was running Naturally Aspirated with a 71 GTO Judge with a tilt front end and a 473 engine. Car ran in the mid to low tens.

I was helping Marty at the time and he wanted a bigger carb but did not want to use a Dominator due to hood clearance issues. So the next step was a 850 cfm style car but with more cfm.

I built Marty a "one off" 3-barrel double pumper carb. It was a lot of work by the way but the rear of the 850 double pumper now had a 3 barrel throttle blade.

He ran the car, (it picked up hp and mph like it was supposed to), and it fit under the hood with a L-88 style dropped base.

The deal was one time I had him remove the rear pump and run the car and it was just as fast as with the rear pump. Deal was he had a high stall converter and did not need the rear pump. A lot of work for nothing except the cfm deal.

This carb flowed a true 950 cfm. Holley sells the 1000 hp carbs which are really 850 cfm carns and the 950 hp carbs which are 750 carbs. (Both tested at a higher test pressure vs the standard 20.4" h2o of the 850 dp and the 3 barrel).

If you have a converter in your car a 3-barrel might be a cheap way to get more cfm without going to a dominator and it will bolt on the new Tomahawk. Food for thought.

Talking **3BBL-Kits-Availibility***

I find it very interesting what the old HSD, & A 1050 CFM 3bbl, can still do while sitting under most any hood, even stock & unaltered, as we are still trying to get there today N/A,(Street Stuff) when it really has ALL been done quite effectily 25-30 years ago with poor heads.

BTW, I bought up what I was told was the last of the 3BBL re-build kits some 5 years ago, the hardest component being the Parachute size vac sec diaphragm... Anyone have a hook up for the complete re-build kits??

Don't recall what the CFM on the primary side was, however it is quite easy to convert these to a progressive linkage, by-passing the vac-sec-sys, and just run on the primaries around town.

P.S. The stock HSD even using a 2 inch spacer is still over .900 inch lower than our Victor, food for thought... approx 6.8(w/2" spacer) VS 7.7 inches NO-Spacer Victor

I remember and old EEL-CO kit that had gears fro the throttle shafts and the fang style squirter to make a vacuum secondary a all 4 bbl at once carb. Still got the gears somewhere, most folks just used a screw inthe factory linkage.

FYI, the 1970 GTO I recently purchased from Marty had a "Tom Vaught" Holley 3 barrel carburetor on it when i bought the car. I re-sold the car before I had much of a chance to drive it, though it seemed to run fairly well.

mrdan7 - we make the kits, but they are NOT inexpensive.
