Default Epoxy primer question

I just finished stripping the frame for my 69 GTO down to bare metal and I'm already starting to see some light flash rust only after a week or so. I was planning on stripping all the suspension parts and paint them all together, but I wont be able to get everything stripped down for at least a month yet. My question is, can I shoot the frame with epoxy primer to seal it and leave it sit for a month until I get everything else stripped; or do I only have a day or so before I need to spray the frame with a top coat after I use epoxy primer. I plan on using eastwood extreme chassis paint for a top coat.

Dan

the eastwood paint is designed to go over bare metal,i recomend to use thier primer first,do not use self etching primer epoxy paint is designed to do what self etching does,i am currently using the eastwood paint the only issue i have come across is that it takes awhile for it to dry unless you crank the heat up or bake it,best thing to do is light coats until each coat dries or you wait for ever, you can prime it and paint when ever you want just scuff it with scotch brite first in case any dirt or grease got on the object you want to spray, hope this helps

Cool One note on primers...

they are made to absorb....paint...grease..moisture, whatever. Only paint or sealer will actually seal. Make no mistake.

Epoxy primer is the most durable and moisture resistant primer you can use. You can certainly leave the frame in epoxy for a month..hell a year would be no problem.

Thanks for the responses.....Since you can obviously tell I have no paint experience, I'm assuming the epoxy primer will be compatible to the top coat of Eastwood Extreme black chassis paint then?

Also would epoxy primer be a good base for PPG paint?

A PPG primer would be...DP90 or such.

You can go a long time with Epoxy. I used PPG DP 90 on my frame four years ago-still have not top coated. Looks great. (car has been garaged-not in the rain) Cured epoxies are generally compatable with most top coats.

There is a window of time when just about any primer based product has to be coated. Check the PPG pages. They will most likely require you scuff and reshoot a seal coat of the same product before topcoating. Not that it isn't done but if you go by their instructions that is the way to go. You do not want adhesion problems and have to respray.

If sprayed correctly the PPG DPLF in black looks a lot like the factory black shade. It isn't UV protected but how often does your frame see daylight?

Stick with one product. Just use the PPG straight through. Stay away from the quick fix stuff. If you are going through the trouble of taking down to bare metal do it right.

I do believe their etch primer can be left without primer for extended periods.

if you sand the primer, hense giving it mechanical bond, you can go outside the recoat window.
