Hi,
I have the complete Pypes sset up on my '71 TA 455 HO. 2.5 in.,downpipes from the stock manifolds, X-pipe, Racepro transverse muffler, and stainless tips. My only complaint is the sound. I want something lower and throaty, but not loud and hopefully no HP compromise. I just received my second '71 TA 455 HO and want to put a new system on it. Any advice? Thanks, RC |

RC, so you are saying that you installed the crossflow system and it is too loud for you? Pypes is testing a new design of that muffler which should be noticably quieter for those that want a more tame sound. Flow will be quite comparable. The only other muffler that works with the Pypes design Transverse system is the DynoMax Ultra Flow which may be marginally quieter. It won't be a major difference. lmk.

I think RC feels the same way as I do with my PYPES transverse system.
The sound is NOT loud and it lacks a bit of a "throaty" sound. I listened to the '76 t/a(PYPES site) that has the very same system with Racepro muffler and mine doesn't exhibit the same tone and its mounted in reverse flow pattern so the flow doesn't enter baffle openings. I'm wondering if maybe its the stock cam in my car that makes the difference, although the sound clip car seems to have a pretty mild cam too. In all, I wouldn't find a reason to use a "quieter" muffler, as the Racepro is very tolerable. If anything, maybe a chambered muffler for a deeper tone but without the performance decrease of a Flowmaster. I had the flowmaster muffler and the performance increase with the PYPES setup IS better.

You are correct Larry.
The volume isn't the issue, it's the tone. I don't care for the "clacky" sound. I, too am looking for a lower frequency muffler. Perhaps I'll try the Dynomax? Thanks for the input, RC |

From what I understand the DYNOMAX is quieter and is a extra cost option with the system.

The Ultra-Flo sounds low to me and definitely will not hurt any power. It is louder on a 455 then a 400 but that is typical for mufflers. The more air flow, the harder it is to tone the sound down! Rocky heard Bob Chumley's 70 with the Ultra-Flo (I think), maybe he can let you know what he thought about its sound.

I have a pypes 3" system with the ultraflow welded mufflers and otehr than the tips and the ZERO ground clearance it's fine and have had several compliments on the sound at the track FWIW...
Now a question anyone running high 10's ow 11's with a 2.5 system or the transverse mufflers ?? supporting about 600 hp. I am thinking about dumping the current system due to ground clearance and the sorry roads we have around here not mixing well.

I am thinking of selling my PYPES crossflow system.
I don't care for the sound, but it may exhibit a "throaty" tone with an engine with a mild to racy cam. The stock engine with the crossflow just isn't producing the tone I want.

I have two friends both with 79 firebirds that have pypes systems. One has a 455 (stock) with headers, x-pipe, and race-pro mufflers. We opted to put the mufflers on reverse so the exhaust flows into the baffles for more of a tone, but once we had the car running it was relively quiet. It has a good tone around 2k to 2.5k but other than that its kind of raspy and higher pitch.
The other car has a a 400 with headers, x-pipe, and pro-v mufflers. The car has a little bigger cam stock (something like 212 212) and sounds incredible. Nice hollow throaty idle, and a great loud tone under accel. I would recommend the pro-v muffler for tone.

I installed the 3" race pro mufflers as they showed and they are throaty. Loud on excelleration. I have set off a few car alarms in parking lots.

I've decided to try the exact set up as last time ,but with a newly
designed Pypes muffler. I'm told they've only made a few of these as prototypes and do not have any sound feedback as yet. They're willing to take it back if I don't like the tone, so I figure I'll give it a try and let ya'll know my two cents worth. |
