Default #62 Heads

Are 62's worth anything I bought a 455 with 62's and I don't need the high compression heads would they be worth trying to use and have the pistons dished or should I hold out for some 6x's

I bought a 455 w/ 62 heads on it. It ran like bat out of hell. I put 96 heads on it and its just not the same. the 62 heads work well on 400's. I would be interested but shipping to NJ would be costly unless you can find a way an economical way to ship them.

# 62's are good heads - 1.77 EX. / 2.11 INT. valves , screw in rocker studs, 72-76 c.c chambers.

* Need Hardend valve seats installed for unleaded gas *

With the 72-76 c.c chambers , they are too small of chambers for a 455 for pump gas . Great performance 400 head , or a 455 with race gas.

Is a #64 considered a good head as well ?. In Jim Hand's book he mentions how some heads have short turn more towards the center of the valve. How might this impact how these heads flow compared to say a 6X.

Just curious if the #62 and the #64 are similar in the way they might act in stock form.

You can't beat Forward Air if you have a terminal nearby or DHL beats UPS by a long shot. Pitch

The P-dude is using my 62 heads in my 400/455 rebuild. It will be a 9.5 compression daily driver.

what all is involved in installing hardend valve seats cause my car runs very strong but pings and I know the heads have not been touched? I have 62's on a 72 400.

Still have the 62's? I've got a pair of 4x I'd like to trade if you've still got them. They're 98cc off a 400.

I found a set of 6x's that I'm going to use so now it looks like I will probably be getting rid of the 62's there just to much for what I need on the 455.
Thanks to everyone for the responses I will probably list them here soon I just need to find a couple of boxes since most everyone hear seems to be on the other coast.

I’m interested the 62’s, and don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I’m not sure if they'll work well with my setup. Maybe you guys can help out…

I’ve got a 400 that’s .030” and align honed. The decks need cleaned up, and was going to be zero decked, but I’m not sure if that’s the best option depending on what heads I go with. I haven’t ordered any parts yet, but am planning on going with a 4.25 Ohio crank, 6.8 Scat rods, and custom Ross pistons. I am going for 400-450 hp, depending on how much $ I would have to sink into heads and high octane gas. The motor needs to run on 89-90 pump gas, so I assume 9-9.5:1 static compression. I’m building a solid bottom end so I can switch to KRE’s in a few years if I want to, and I only want to buy pistons once. The motor will be mostly street driven.

Which route is better?
1. Huge dish (about 35cc) with zero deck and ~.04 gasket 9.13:1 comp
2. Less dish (about 30cc) with the piston .015 or so in the hole and ~.04 gasket 9.25:1 comp
3. Even less dish (about 27-28cc), zero deck, .04 gasket, with a 4” stroke 9.22:1 comp
4. Keep the 4x (98cc) heads and thread for studs, put in big valves, light bowl work, deck to optimal compression.

I'm not sure exactly how much work the 4x’s would need otherwise. Probably a standard rebuild. My machinist hasn’t had time to cc or flow bench them for a base point yet. They're out of a '73 2v 400 Lemans. I can't remember the date code, but can call the machine shop and find out.

James408

You running a thick head gasket? Dished pistons? Any problems with pump gas? I'm just about to swap a set of 62's on to my 400...

I'm running a standard gasket with TRW forged flat top pistons. I don't remember the part number but with these pistons, I am running 9.98:1 compression. Just easier to say 10.1. I do not have any detonation problems. The car runs good and stays cool. I run 93 octane with a lead additive. I rebuilt this motor about five years ago and it is running great. I had been racing the car for few years before and wanted to freshen up the motor. The TRW's looked great, so I used them again. I have a Mallory Unilite distributor run and have the timing set at 13 degrees initial and 34-35 total all in by 3100 rpm. All in all, I have been running these pistons for 11 years. I like these heads alot.
