Does anyone know of a source for 3:55 ratio 12 bolt gears for a 4 series carrier?

Richmond's lowest gear(numerical) is 3.73 for a series 4.

Nobody makes a 3.55 in a 4-series carrier. I did alot of calling around before I bought my 3.73's and everyone said the same thing. I believe that you can machine down the ring gear to get it to fit...but I've heard it's a pain in the a$$.

Thats what I am hearing as well.

Did you get any quotes on machining the ring gear down?
Maybe one of the gear vendors would provide the extra service.



I am running 3.73 gears now.

No, but a friend of mine, who has a chassis/paint & body shop, called around to try to see how much it would cost to get a bulk order of the 3.55's machined down to fit a 4-series carrier. I think he said the cost for the gears would be in the ballpark of $500.00! I'm not sure if that was consumer price, my price, or his cost. I didn't get a price on just machining down the gear. I went through the same dilema. I didn't really want to put 3.73's behind my blower set-up because I figure that I would be going through the traps roughly at 7800-8000rpm. Oh well...what can you do.

The 3.73 gear is pretty thin. I'd hate to see how thin the 3.55 gear is.

I just replaced 4.56s with 3.73 the 3.73 is REALLY THIN! LOL

last $$ I will spend on this damn 12bolt. I could have had a custom 9" for what Im in the 12bolt and its still nothing to brag about

I just replaced my 4.10's with 3.73's on my 4 series carrier. I really doubt anyone makes 3.55's, I looked around pretty good, Strange, Richmond, US Gear, etc. Now if you were going the other way uou could use a spacer. Just use 3.73's and a taller tire, that is what I did. -Jim

Brian,

$500 seems a little steep for the gears.
At that rate it might be a better path to sell the existing setup and seek a 9 inch.

Are you spinning your engine to 8000 rpm now?
What is the bore and stroke of your engine, what crank and rods are you running?

Yes, the ring gear is thin and that is definately a concern.

I guess maybe I should be asking for a 3 series spool instead of 3 series gear to fit the 4 series spool.

IS THERE A 3 SERIES SPOOL AVAILABLE?


By the way I am running the tallest tire that I can find (30.9")

The cost is why he didn't go through with the deal. I just put 3.73's and was done with it.

My redline is 7600rpm, but I'm figuring that I will be going through the traps between 7800-8000 Once I burn up the DR's (275) that I have I might trim my wheelwell alittle, so that I can put a 295 DR on it. My bore/stroke is 4.350/4.00, rods are Olivers, and the crank is a Moldex billet.
