69 Judge question
Hey everyone:
As some of you know, I am having a nut and bolt restoration done to a numbers matching, carousel red, 4 speed with hideaways. RA III car, black interior. I elected to have all metal parts dipped, stripped, and ecoated and so far I couldn't be happier. Will post pix soon as the process as been pretty cool. I am trying to determine if my alternator is correct but am having some trouble reading the numbers. Can someone tell me what number it should be please? It is a 4 speed, with power discs, no air. The car was built July 14th, 1969. How should the date code be shown? Ditto question with respect to the power brake booster and master brake cylinder. Does anyone know where to get walnut shells for sandblasting? I am in the Milwaukee area. Lastly, I am trying to find a correct intake manifold. Does anybody have a 69 manifold with a June build date? I have April (maybe 3rd week?) and would be happy to swap or something. I would prefer just to buy. Thanks. TEG |

Question, why would you want to trade out an intake manifold that pre-dates the build date of your car by a reasonable amount of time, unless the part # is not correct for your application. A July 14, 69 car with an April 69 dated manifold seems reasonable to me. And it may well be the original/correct manifold for your car. For example, I have an 3rd wk of April 69 RAIII conv block cast C289 (Mar 28) Heads A299 (Jan29) & B049 (Feb 04) intake A229 (Jan 22) water pump B229 (Feb 22). All numbers pre-date the car, but not buy too much. Am I missing something? You can get walnut shells from Eastwood. Yes the alternator should have a date on it. Mine is B229 (Feb 22 69) & 1100700 but this number is for an a/c car. not correct for yours. I'll check & fill you in I another post, or someone else might.

Hi Teg,
I really can't help you out, but if you would like to sell your intake after you find the correct I would be interested in it for my Judge. I would like to see pics of what you have done with your body panels as I was thinking about the same process you did. Good luck Tim

just a note for the people having parts dipped and stripped, on your doors and trunk lid, it will start rusting at the seams after the car is painted, I run my own restoration shop and did this process a few years ago until we ran into this problem, the chemical gets into the seam between the outer shell and inner shell and there is no way to get anything in there to stop the metal from rusting once moisture gets in there, it is not to noticable on dark colored cars but on light colored cars I did a white and a silver car, it will constantly bleed rust orange at the seams, unless you put seam sealer over the seam, good luck

acid dipping/e-coating
I heard there were two ways of doing it. The process used on my car involves 14 different tank/neutralizing applications. I am not worried; although I have heard of a much quicker process that does lead to some concerns. I also trust the restorer implicitly, he is one of the best in the country. I do appreciate the comments, though.
I do not think an April dated intake is appropriate for a July car. I have heard many times that 6 to 8 weeks is maximum look back time. I think I miss by about a month. Thanks for the input on the alternator and the walnut shells. Yes, I would be happy to sell the manifold which is properly coded once I find a June. |

Forgot to mention...
It is a Fremont car. I was also lucky enough to find the buildsheet under the hump (beneath the tar paper). I heard somewhere that Fremont Judges were kind of rare, but I don't know anything about that.

What are the date codes on the rest of your engine?
Here's a thread I started awhile back about exactly this question (about engine date codes): http://216.178.81.108/forums/showthread.php?t=458560 We also NEED to know what carb you have and if it's correct by the build sheet. This is an ongoing subject of debate.

Try Burrie for blasting media
These guys are in Waukesha, and had walnut shells a couple of years ago when I needed them for one of my restorations. I am more experienced with Corvette restorations than Pontiacs, but your present intake date would satisfy even the pickiest NCRS judge I ever met. Maybe Pontiacs were assembled differently making the required dates much closer together.

Walnut Shells/Build Dates
Thanks for the information, Shane. I am in Waukesha now. I will call today.
Without looking at my PHS papers, I believe there is a ship date or completion date (can't remember exactly which) of July 14. I remember this distinctly as it is also my wedding anniversary which I offered to my wife as why "we were meant to have this car." Dan Whitmore is building the engine and I don't have the date codes available. I should get the engine back soon and can update the board if anyone cares for this information. |

The PHS does not show the build date--the ship date is after the build date of course. My car was built 01C (January, third week) and shipped 2/5/69. That intake manifold date may be closer than you think!
Look at your data plate for the build month and week.

On the PHS, there is a date of execution (date papers were drawn) and date shipped (self explanatory). Sometimes they are the same date, sometimes the shipped date is later. The Car was built within one or two days before the execution date.
That's a good story about your anniversary date, it still shares a common date in one form or another. I'd milk it for all it's worth with her as needed. |

DuaJudges- I have several 69 intakes that I would be willing to swap. I have a 69 Judge 05C build that could use your intake. I'll have to check the dates on mine but i think I have one F169 (June 16, 69) I assume you want the 69 part # 9794234 and yours is the same part# as well??
