I need the cooling experts to help me out with this.
I have a 1966 421,.060 overbore, filled block, rodney red rad, stock pulliesfor a non air car, 165 degree thermostat, stock water pump ,fan shroud. The car runs good but heats up at idle and in stop and go traffic. It runs 160 F on the highway. I am thinking smaller diameter pullies to make my water pump spin faster. I tired 3 different thermostats. 165, 180, 190 they did not make ant differance. I bought a top of the line Rad (Rodney Red) and that still hasnt helped. I need idea's Shawn

Again, different thermostats won't make a difference in overheating unless the original is stuck closed. They only control the MINIMUM temp the engine runs at. If you are overheating you have other problems.
Since your issues are at low speed, you either have low coolant flow or low air flow thru the radiator at idle. If you haven't checked the pump, read the sticky thread on top of this forum..it'll take a while tho, but you'll get the idea in a few pages or so. George |

Problem could also be the fan clutch. To check it do the following. Bring engine to operating temperature and then shut down. Spin fan blade with your hand in direction of normal rotation. If it makes one revolution or more the clutch is worn out and needs to be replaced. If it needs replacement use a Hayden #2797. Good luck.

No Clutch fan, just a regular stock 7 blade

To make a VERY generalized statement, overheating at a stop or at idle is often an airflow issue, whereas overheating while moving is often a water flow issue.
How is the fan depth in the shroud? If you park a house fan in front of the car to artificially improve the airflow across the radiator, does that help the problem? Are you interested in trying an electric fan - even if only temporarily - to see if that changes the situation? I have no idea how much the filled block could be affecting your situation; I'm just throwing out ideas/suggestions. |

1. I agree with George. You have an air flow problem or a fluid flow problem.

Regular stock seven blade? Diameter? Shroud? Shroud sealed to radiator? Fan in shroud correctly?

The fan was the stock off my 389, Fan shroud was also stock (California Air Car) Every thing was left in the stock position. Guys thank you for all you help so far.

What exactly does the temp get up to when idling in traffic? You have a mechanical gauge or an electric sender and the '3 bar' needle style gauge?
I'd try the above suggestion of letting it idle in your driveway and putting a ordinary house pedestal fan in front and blowing into the front of the radiator, see if that helps. If it does, you have ruled in you have an airflow problem. If it doesn't help the slightest, i'd be checking your water pumps backing plate clearance next [ be more inclined to check that regardless!! ]. |

Check to see if your upper rad hose is higher than your radiator.. See this thread:
