Default 74 shaker hood

would a 1979 trans am shaker hood fit on a 74 trans am

No, the contours of the hood are different, you would have to change the front end as well. The 77-81 hoods are pretty flat, the 70-76 hood have A higher raised center with a different shape.

Notice the difference. As noted, the 77 and later 2nd Gen hoods are pretty much flat-
The '76 and earlier (single headlight style cars) have a distinct body line dip inboard of each headlight bowl that extends back into the hood.
