Default 64 389 Adding power steering

The two grooves on the balancer pulley do not line up with the two grooves on the water pump pulley. The inner groove on the water pump pulley will line up with the outer groove on the balancer pulley only. The balancer pulley was on the car with manual steering when I got it so only one groove was being used. I cannot find a part number on the balancer pulley, only an S. Are there deeper pulleys that would bring it out so it would line up or is it possible that the shaft the balancer bolts too that goes through the timing cover is too short, it is a replacement off of another car (supposed to be a 64 389)?

balancer pulleys are typically only one depth, so I suspect the water pump pulley is wrong. only one hub for balancer to crank, so it can never be too short. Does the PS pulley line up with the crank pulley groove? That will confirm if the water pulley is wrong. What are the part no. on the PS and water pulley?

Water pump pulley is part # 9778808 I cleaned the crank pulley and still no Prt # showing. It is 2 groove and 1 3/4" deep. the power steering pulley does line up with the outer groove of the crank pulley but not with the inner groove. the alternator does not line up with the inner groove either.

boy, now I am confused. Typically the 2 groove water pump (wp) is to line up with the two groove crank, like you said. PS lines up with outer crank and alt lines up with inner crank. both across the wp.
your 9778808 wp is for a 65 but is the same pulley as the 64 538547 with PS.
okay, if the wp is supposed to work, then the crank is too far back, but if I move the crank forward to match the wp, both the alt and the PS would be wrong.
but if the crank is supposed to work, then the wp is too far forward, but if I move the wp backward to match the crank, the PS would be right and not the alt based on what you said.
So, what does this mean, since the hub for the balancer has a lip and can only go in so far, cause if it went in too far, the hub would rub on the timing chain cover, so usually the crank pulley is in the right location by default. The wp should work, be sure there is no spacer behind the pulley and the water pump. Measure the height (depth) of the water pump, cause if the water pump shaft was out too far, or the wrong one used on a rebuilt water pump, then the pump hub would be out too far and the pulley would not line up.
Lastly, the 64 alt single groove pulley is universal number used all through till at least 1972 and is very common. If the alternator bracket is correct, that alt if it has the right pulley should line up with the crank. Maybe you also have the wrong alt pulley.
Check the water pump depth, no spacer, what does the alt line up with or how far off is it from the inner crank groove???

water pump measurement is 3 5/8" as close as I can tell. manual steering water pump pulley lines up with outer groove of crank pulley. as does the powerr steering pulley. nothing seems to line up with inner groove of crank pulley. crank snout adapter that pulleys bolt to is 1 1/4" deep until the bevel (back side) front is 1/2" thick. If the crank pulley was out an additional 1/2" everything would line up. the power steering assembly and bracket it sits in came from someone else so I don't know what year car it came out of, supposed to be out of a 64 gto, who knows?

okay, will measure some crank hubs and see if yours is too shallow. 1/2 seems like a lot for the hub to be off, but I will check some and get back to you. Also, confirm your crank pulleys have 6 bolts holding it to the hub, with the balancer mass inside the pulleys, not the later 4 bolt setup, which usually will not work.

okay, checked some hubs, the 6 bolt ones are all 1 1/4 in to the bevel, for a total of about 1 1/2 to the backside of hub. The hub is 1/2 thick, so it sounds like yours is correct. Now I was looking at the pulleys and noticed that most of mine are three groove crank pulleys, a two groove front one and a single groove rear one for the AC. The AC pulley nests into the two groove, but the non AC 2 groove pulley is deeper. So maybe you have the AC two groove pulley which is not as deep instead of the non AC two groove one. Of course, that would mean the outer crank groove you currently have that you said lines up, would be back somewhat from and would move outward. lastly, I have some older hubs that were three bolt, so check that we are talking about the 6 bolt setup.

Default 389 GTO pulleys wrong

Looks like you are narrowing this down, I have the 6 bolt hub so that is a good thing. Looks like I need the deeper two groove pulley for the crank.
