front backing plates

are the front brake backing plates from a64 gp different than a 65 with alum wheels? i have 8lugs from a 65? they rubbed so i had them cut 1/2 in. off the back. cost plenty. i put them on and they still hit the backing plate. any light any one can shed on my problem would be appricated. clyde
