I recently swapped my 67 lemans 2 speed tranny with a th400. I had to make sure the the tranny going in was going to bolt up to a pontiac motor( a chevy housing will not bolt up to a pontiac motor), relocate the tranny crossmember(move it back on the frame ), shorten or replace the driveshaft, purchase a shifter conversion kit to convert the floor shifter to a three speed and you will need a new driveshaft yoke. I hope this helps.

Fred,
I know your after an upgrade, but if you know for sure your pump is gone. I should have a pump for your 300. Let me know if you want to go that route. Jeff

hi jeff
i thought i had exhausted all avenues to salvage this st 300 cause i could not find parts. i really didn't want to change it out but thought i would have to.it would be great if you have a pump.would appreciate you checking and letting me know. we are pulling the tranny next weekend after it comes back from paint. all indications say the problem is the front pump so tried to get prepared for the next step on the long road to resto.besides it's almost cruisin time so i gots to get er done.i'll let you know as soon as i find out. thanks for the help fred spendin money havin fun gittin er done |

Fred,
I put a th350 in my 67.As robojo said you'll need a pontiac trans. With the th350,I was able to use the stock drive shaft and left the trans mount in the stock location.I notched my original shifter for 1st gear [I wanted to keep the original shifter]there is plenty of room to do so.You will need a 3 speed shifter cable, the 2sp is too short. Then you need to make or buy a throttle bracket to hold the detent cable.I cut a later bracket and welded to my original. once painted it is hard to notice from original. Then just make sure you have the stud on your carb to hook the detent cable to. Hope this helps you out. Greg |

Fred, if you are looking for a replacement st300, I have one from my 66 LeMans that was supposed the original and to be in good working order when removed (upgraded when engine was replaced). If you near Erie, PA you can pick it up cheap, if that is something you want to use. Mitch

I've got a 67 Lemans I'm having a problem with the ST300. It upshifts fine while driving, but when I slow up, it waits til the stop sign before dropping out of high gear with a slam to the driveshaft that sounds like I'm doing a neutral drop. All the local tranny shops want to do a full rebuild for $700-900. I see some fluid coming out of the front pump seal as well. I don't know if it's a related problem or not since it's always leaked a few drops and I assumed it was the pan gasket. Anybody have any advice, or someone with a good one near Buffalo NY? Erie Pa isn't a bad drive, if the deal on this thread falls through -- give me a shout! Thanks, Dennis

Check your soleniod. It could be crossed (wires)
If this is a more recent issue it could be bands and/or your modulator. Don't think it's the pump, but I'm no exspert. $800 for an overhaul is not a bad deal. Best of luck Fred, Pump is on the way!

Thanks Jeff, I'll check it out. It just started last year, it's my wife's car so I don't know if it started intermittently or not. Every time she complained and I took it for a test drive it didn't do it. I confiscated the car and found it only did it after about 20 minutes of driving. Later it got worse and when I took it out of storage last week it did it right away. Hope it's just a popped vac line on the modulator, but I thought the vac mod only controlled upshifting?
