so ive purchased 2.5" X pypes with street pro 14" mufflers for my 64 gto.
Stock manifolds.

I have a few simple questions...

1) The street pro mufflers are not labled for in and out,
does it not matter which way is in or out?

2) how far should my tailpipe stick into the muffler?
(and also the x pipe stick into the muffler on the other side?)

3)Is it ok to use the s.s. band clamps at all connections
Or should i find someone to weld once i get it fitted properly.
or does it not matter.

4) Where should the "X" be located on the 64 gto?
Right under the u-joint? Im installing from the rear and proceding
forward. I have not made it there yet.

I just put a 3" system with Race Pros in my '66. Great product!

I did the same as you, and started from the rear. It was a mistake! I found that it was easier to get it right by doing it the other way, and putting the pipes from the X to the mufflers in last.

Don't cut any pipes until you are 100% sure that you need to (you probably don'!), and if you do need to shorten the pipes, only cut the header or muffler end. I ruined a couple of my pipes trying to rush the install when tired, and had to replace them. The spacing between the headers was perfect out of the box, and I ruined them by cutting the angle. Live and learn!

The X pipe should go right about where the U joint is. Try to keep it as high and forward as you can for ground clearance, but without hitting the crossmember.

The band clamps are fine. I was going to weld mine, but ended up just using the clamps. It makes it nice, because you are probably going to have to readjust it a few times to keep it from hitting the undercarriage parts here and there.

Good luck! I noticed a big difference in performance with my X system and good flowing mufflers......

thanks for the response and answering a couple of my questions.
I have bolted on the mufflers and tailpipes, the "X" seems to be
about 12-14" to the rear of the u-joint. does this seem ok?

I will defininately need to cut the down pipes from my manifolds,
as they come back almost to the u-joint themselves.

are the street pro mufflers reversible? anyone?

also, how the heck do the muffler hangers work? any pics?

The street-pros are reversable. They are the same in either direction.

Have you had a look at the picture galleries on the Pypes website? There are a several pictures of GTO installs. Also I recommend that you have a look at the 67 Chevelle gallery at the top of the list. It has a good shot of the muffler hangers installed.

Downpipes are one of the most common components that need to be shortened. They are designed longer to fit several different applications. Just make sure you have it measured right before you make your cuts.

hey dm fan, I seen your post about new muffler hangers at PY.
They must not have them yet. They shipped me the current
replacement model. Do you know if the new ones will be longer(the rubber part) It looks that way from the picture you posted.

I did get my mufflers hung last night, using the current hanger.
That really tucks the mufflers way up there. Im crossing my fingers
that the tailpipes will still fit on ok. :-s

The new muffler hangers are available. We had and still have an amount of pre-built systems with the old hangers. If you want to return those hangers and exchange them for the new ones, just give PY a call.

If you put the muffler straps in the factory position, the mufflers will be too high and the tailpipes won't fit. You need to install the straps UNDER the framing using large washers. This will lower the mufflers and allow the tailpipes to fit better.

do you know if the new ones are longer to let the mufflers
hang lower, or will it still be the same problem.
If its going to be the same problem, then ill prolly just
stick with what i have.

the new ones look like the hanger in the middle. They have a longer rubber strap.

The correct height of the mufflers is determined by the proper alignment of the tailpipes. Get your tailpipes aligned where they clear nicely and then adjust your muffler height to the tails.

It seems like if you had a std muffler hanger height that would work for a certain car (mine being 64 gto) then there would be no questions.
For instance, use "such and such" muffler hanger, hang the muffler, insert the tailpipe, then attach tailpipe hanger.
Maybe this is what the new hanger will accomplish. With the strap being longer, and 3 holes.
Then someone could come on here and tell me to use the third hole
to hang your muffler on the 64 or something like that.

Trying to adjust your muffler to your tailpipe is a pain in the knuckles.

It sure is fun tho ..... I love diggin the rust outta my eyes at the end
of a frustrating night trying to adjust my muffler to my tailpipes. :-)

unfortunately, when it comes to performance exhaust, there is not standard. That same tailpipe works for all A-bodies. With owners modifying their cars more than ever(headers, 2.5" pipe, 3" pipe, slicks, suspension upgrades, rears etc), it would be impossible to have a predetermined muffler hanger height. Hence, our idea to make an oem muffler hanger but with an extended length universal strap.

No matter what type of a hanger we design, we would ALWAYS recommend that you position your tailpipes first, then the mufflers to match that position.

thanks ccass, yea your prolly right. Seems like a good idea on the adjustable
hanger straps. Ive got mine on order for a free exchange. :-)

Ive taken off the other straps and re-aligned the tailpipes and got the
mufflers in place, waiting for the new hangers. Looks like theyll need to
be 2 or 3 inches longer to hang mine.

Seems like the passenger side is harder to get aligned properly.
The driver side seems to align simply. I think I read this in another thread.

I hooked up the 'X' pipe to the front of the mufflers, just to get an idea.
The X hooked in nicely. The front of the X might need some work.
