So now that I have approximately 100 + miles on my 71 GTO - my first highway cruise was kind of eventful. I noticed the rear end starting to "whine". I went to a buddy's garage and found out my pinion seal decided to pack it in and I had no oil in the rear. I got that fixed up and re-filled but now the gears are noisy - not rock crusher noisy but I notice it. My buddy says it may go away in a few hundred miles after the gears get meshed together again. I'll have to wait and see.

However - I found a 77 TransAm at the local wreckers. Would that TransAm rear fit the 71 GTO ?

You would need to have the perched cut off the TA rear and the control arm mounts welded to it. Then I <think> the driveshaft needs cutting shorter.

You would be money ahead finding an 8.5 corp rear for an A-body. Or a 66-up 12 bolt A-body rear. With a 66-67 rear it is narrower and allows more meat under the car.

I've never been lucky enough to get a noisey rear axle to quiet down with use. Guess at this point you don't have nothing to lose by trying it.

Converting the TA rear end to "A" mounts sounds like a big project to me. Like was previously posted, you would be better off finding an "A" body rear end.

You might consider replacing the gear set and bearings in your exsisting rear end.
