67 GTO
Car has been apart for 2 years and am getting around to putting her back together dropped the motor and trans and exhaust system in today Now for the stupid question Which end of the driveshaft goes towards the trans the fat end or the smaller end I have been looking in a restoration and a shop manual and can't find it anywhere any help would be great Thank you in advance Paul |

Smaller end (yolk) to trans. Larger end to rear U-joint

have it with the balance weights to the front of the car, usually fat end to the front.

I'll be the tie breaker. I have 3 assembled 67 shafts out in my shop, and all have the yoke on the "fat" end. The long tapered end goes to the rear.

Got to look at a 67 today and the fat end goes to the trans

Just browsing through the August issue of HPP and the lead letter is from Keith Seymour, who was a GM driveline development engineer for many years, and he states that the reason driveshafts are different sizes on the ends is very simple: so they could use an existing yoke. Driveshaft diameter is determined by "critical-speed requirements", and has to be strong enough in the middle so it won't jump and flex, but it doesn''t need to be that big at the ends. Therefore, if a larger yoke didn't already exist, there was no reason to tool one up. Much cheaper to swedge the shaft down.
So unless originality is a factor, maybe there's no real reason to keep track of it. |
