My wife and I were talking last night and the idea of a round the country tour with the 65 we are building right now was discussed, and sounds like fun. So.... My question is with a 9.5:1 389 tripower what can I squeeze out of it for milage? It curently has a th400, but I am seriously looking at a tko conversion. Rear gears can be changed to whatever is optimum for the tko, opinions on optimum? The motor is out and being gone thru now so changes could be made there also.
Also, I am going to add aftermarket air, who's kit is considered the best? Thanks tons, Larry |

Most recent issue of The Legend has a '70 Judge that did a little better than 17mpg after a TKO conversion. If you keep your foot out of it and try to run most of the trip on the 2bbl, I bet you could do a little better with your '65. I wouldn't go through the trouble of swapping gears, the TKO seems to perform the best with a 3.55-3.73 rear. I'm running 3.90s, but only because that's what was in there. You want to make sure you're not running at too low an RPM in 5th, or gas mileage will actually suffer and you could damage your engine.
As for aftermarket air, I went with Vintage Air, but there are plenty of guys running Classic Auto Air as well. I don't think there are any huge differences between the two systems, so you're probably going to be happy with either. Good luck!

I am getting about 16 mpg @ 65-70 with my TKO 600 behind a 9.5:1 462 with tripower and 4:10 gears.
It is turning in the low 2000's at these speeds. The Tremec is the best mod I did to a pretty modified car........ I also have a Vintage Air setup in mine, and it is great! |

Thanks for the input. My dad had had a new 64 GTO when I was a kid, and it seems he got about 17 on trips, but am not sure, long time ago.
I'll fiddle with the linkage before I go to streach out the secondarys kick in point. Glen, beautiful car! I was feeling guilty about my Miata when I saw your no rice thing, till I saw the MPV, Ha. My miata is down at Corky Bells in Texas being used as a mule for his new twin screw, will probably be faster than my goat..... I kind of figured Vintage Air as they have been around forever. Thanks, Larry |

My old one, which was a stock and very tired tripower 389, got 17 with 3:90s at 55-60...... I am well into the triple digits before the secondaries kick in. Just adjust it so that they are all wot at the same time. BTW< the MPV is looong gone. She drives a Sequoia now, so she still burns rice. At least it has a V8! Twin screw SC in a Miata!? Why not just put a 455 in it and be done with it, kind of like a modern day Cobra...... |

Classic Chevy 5 speed seems to be a good place to get the tremec. Mine came from Dark Horse.....

Sat down and figured out the payback on a TKO conversion [mistake] and it would take 40-60,000 miles to justify. So I am rebuilding the 400, but I will start looking for a TKO and all the other parts at my leasure [read cheap] just because it would be more fun. A TKO conversion is three weeks work for me in the kit form, just not that important.

Justify? I can't "justify" much on my car, but I sure do enjoy it! ![]() I didn't do the TKO for mileage, I did it to allow the use of steeper gears with no highway RPM penalty. The better mileage is a by product of that! |

I knew I would get a hard time with that statement, and rightfully so, it sounded kind of dumb to me too...
I was undecided as to auto or TKO for other reasons, just kind of nudged me one way, for now anyway. I spent 17g's on a Miata motor last year, so I'm just as guilty as the next gearhead. Just a bit of a building slump [builder]up here in Michigan, watching my pennys a little. Larry |

As you figured out, to pay for the Tremec in fuel savings would take a loooooong time. Then again, my buddy just paid around $1600 for a beefed up Muncie to replace the one he broke in his Judge. H heas 3:90s, and will still be turning almost 1000 rpm more than I at highway speeds. He didn't want to cut his trans tunnel either (I can't blame him, as the car is #s matching). But it wouldn't cost that much more to get a TKO600, which is stronger and has the OD. My GTO is my toy. tried to make it as trick as possible without being too obvious...... The dash is the biggest exception but I like it. It is pretty cool having the extra gear..... Nothing like spinning 2700 rpm @ 80 mph with 4:10s out back! |
