I went by the shop where my car is getting painted and noticed what looked like 'air' bubbles on a few spots on the hood. The shop owner claimed that he had to buff the paint. It didnt looked like it could be buffed out to me.
Anyone have experience with this?

Did you have any filler on your hood?I know sometimes when the paint job is baked in the spray booth the heat can cause the primer and paint to lift up.Did they do the body work?I've seen where cars have had panels blister up in the heat and then shrink back down once they cool down.It might look ok once cool but every time out in the sun theres a chance it will bubble again.Bubbles aren't good and sanding and buffing isn't the correct cure.

There is no filler on the hood that I know of.

What is the cure for bubbling? I am going to meet up with him again and I want to make sure what needs to be done to make it right.

When you took the car to the shop was the body work already done?Or did they do it?I would find out if they did any fill work to the hood.How large are the area's that are bubbled and about how many?The paint raised up off of somthing.The guy you talked told you it needed sanded and rubbed,I've seen where guys let it settle back down then sand and rubb it.Only to have it come back when the panel gets hot.

I took it to the shop because the fender was damaged. There was a a few spots on the hood that some paint was knocked off but not damaged.
They painted the fender, door, hood, and front end. The hood was the only place I saw the bubbles. They are very small bubbles, almost look like air or dust bubbles.

Could possibly just be dust. If that's what it is, it shouldn't be a big issue. Buffing will probably take car of it.

I agree if they are small then it will sand out,I wasnt sure if they were large or not.

If it's a base/clear paint then I would bet its "solvent pop" in the clear. Clear was layed on too thick, or was not able to flash between coats. They will have to be sanded out and cleared again.

It is a base/clear paint. Is it normal for the painter to miss these details?
I just find it wierd that they would have me come by to look at it and they wouldnt even notice.

Im a painter at a pontiac dealer ship,If it is solvent pop It would be in more than just a few spots.They would be very small little dots,almost like pin pricks.If it is solvent pop yes it would need painted over.Painters can miss this type of thing,or they may not want to do it over,hoping you just dont see it!Did you feel the spots,are they big enough to were you can feel them?

They are big enough to feel them. There might have been more but I just noticed a couple of them. I will look it over better when I go back.

I think that your description is throwing people off. I'm gussing that they see air bubbles when the problem is what is called nibs. They are specks of dirt that got in the paint. Even in the cleanest paint booth, you can get nibs. They color sand out without a problem.

Yeah if you can feel them it's not solvent pop.Most likely specs of dirt,like prior post said they should sand out.Good luck

Sorry about throwing you guys off. This is my first paint experience and I guess Im not really sure what they are. I hope you are correct about them color sanding out.
