Just wonderin' how they look/sound.

For that matter, what are some of the best hidden stereo ideas being used out there?

I'm trying to come up with the best cd/satellite radio idea and still look very stock.

I have them in my convertible. They work great. Hard to set emergency brake though. I replaced the ones that were in there with upgraded speakers. I also mounted my stereo in the glove box. I made a cut out on the top side of the back wall just big enough for the radio to slide through. Added a faceplate and mounted it to the top so I could still use the bottom of the glove box. I also built 6X9 speakers in a box and mounted it on the driveshaft hump between the rear seats. I have no problems hearing the radio w/top down. Quick glance and still looks stock. Hard to see the rear speakers in the pic. Here is the thread: w/pics

I did a similar thing with my car. Bought a Sirius equiped kenwood stereo and a universal under-dash mount. I cut the back of the mount so that the face of it just sits flush with the closed glove box door. I only had one stock speaker on the back deck so I cut a hole thru the package tray. I found some old-school metal speaker grille colors in the back room of my local radio shack, they sold them to me for 99 cents! I took the old speaker cover to Home Depot to get a paint match, then painted the mouse-shaped Sirius antenna and the grilles the correct green color I put the sirius antenna on the package tray. I also got the kick panel speaker moldings, but put in my own kenwoods, to accompany the new kenwoods under the package tray. Drawbacks- cannot use emergency brake, and sometimes I kick the speaker cover off when I get in the car. Also, I have to open the glove box to change the CD/radio settings. BUT, it looks and sounds awesome, and noone notices the modern stuff til I show them. Driving around with the glove box door open is no big deal, but you may want a wired remote.

Yup, use the remote. The radio I bought has a lead out the back for a remote. I need to get some sort of remote eye to attach to it so I don't have to have the glove box door open to use the remote. Look into that when you buy your radio. When you cut the back out, be careful because the plastic is very hard and can break easily into a bigger opening than you may want. Take your time.

I have had kick panel speakers in my car for
34 years. What I did on my car is cut out the
sheetmetal that runs across the middle of the large
opening behind the kick panels, and then the speakers nestle nicely in there. I have very thin speaker grilles on my kick panels, and the
driver's side is no where near the emergency brake.

When you guys say that the e-brake usage is lost, is that with the speakers that come with the kick panels or is it only the aftermarket speakers that stick out. With a 4 speed, that e-brake is kinda handy. HurstJudge's metal cutting idea is a good one for the sake of keeping the ebrake.

Yup, Hurst's is a great idea. The aftermarket kick panels that you can buy with the speakers already built in, you won't be able to put on the parking brake easily, or at all. I too did cut out my own back in the 80's and put in small speakers and could still use the brake. For functionality, I'd do what hurst is suggesting. The ones in my vert is an automatic car, so I don't use the ebrake.

If anyones interested I have an extra glovebox insert That's been laying around here for a few years now. It has some small holes in the bottom from an fm converter that could be filled. Cut this one for a hidden radio and save your good one?

Everybody, I'm bringing this thread back from the dead.

I'm having trouble finding a cd deck to put in my glove box that has Radio frequency (RF) remote control. I would like to mount it in the glove box, and be able to control it with the door closed.

Anybody know the make that has this RF remote. Or can you still buy the old remote style that had a wire on it?....that would work as well.

I'm about to put a cd player and speakers in mine this week so I don't yet have the pics, but I'll give you a quick rundown of the radio guy's suggestions.

Mount the cd player under the seat or in the glove box and run a wired control panel to the ash tray so it's accessible. This control panel according to him is just like the panel you'd find on the back of a boat (think diving platform off the back) to control the deck mounted in the front of the boat. Haven't seen the hardware yet, so I'm not sure what all controls can be had (volume, seek, etc), but based on what he did with the speakers, I believe this guy could pull off anything. My goal was modern sound from a stock look.

Just to comment on the original point of the post regarding kick panel speakers...
I had the dash-mounted 5x7 was replaced with 2 4" two ways which compliment the rear 6x9's really well. 200 watt Clarion deck. Very rich sound for country and rock music.

about the problem with the parking brake and the kick pad speakers. on my 66 gto the front of the hand brake is secured to the firewall, and the rear is secured with one bolt to the dash. i just cut a one inch long piece of scrap from junk metal thicker than the dash guage and spaced it over at the dash to the inside, under a inch.,once it is unbolted from the dash you can pull it away from the kick pannels to gain clearance. it worked fine.

I never found a stereo with the RF remote. They all seem to be IR. I ended up putting a Pioneer with remote in mine in the glove box. I just open the glove box door when driving. I mounted four small wood blocks to a piece of 1/4" plywood and covered it with black vinyl. Used screws through the insert into the blocks. I had to cut out the back of the plastic insert to get it to fit, but that supported the back of the stereo.

Guys, did some more digging on this, and as Liberty blue mentioned, get a deck with wired remote control and place the remote in the ashtray. Seems like some the fancy DVD players out there have RF remote, but that's it.

I think I may get the Clarion MD455. It is a marine deck as I guess a lot of boats keep the deck downstairs to run the TV, etc, and the wired remote is for the captain upstairs at the steering wheel.

The good thing about this deck is that it has provisions for the wired remote control available from Clarion and it also has a aux input for a portable satellite radio setup.

I searched wired remote control on google and found it.

Hey folks, rather then modding your glove box to fit a CD player why don't folks by a FM stereo radio and mod it to accept an aux in. W/ .mp3 players out there you could just have a 1/8" jack that you tuck up under the dash when not using and plug into your ipod when you are.

This seems like it would be an easy way to get original looking w/ better stereo. As i'm not an electrition, i may be missing something, but...wouldn't it work?
