Have to agree with Spartan, a lot of bad info flying around about GT-37. One being Sawruk was quoted as saying only 100 ,71 1/2 (sword stripe) GT-37's where built. Most of the original 71 GT's you see are sword stripe cars. The hard to find ones are the eybrow stripe cars.

These cars seem to strike an interest in alot of people. Some have an advantage to as who they know, and who they have talked to.I know sawruk and will stick w/ what he has said. Hope to see more on this topic.

Here's a better idea: try to find a real car and see what equipment it has.
Sawruk's 1 of 100 estimate was nothing more than that - an estimate. As it was made about 20 years ago, when little was known about these cars, I think we can let that one pass. A lot has been learned since then. |

No I don't. But I found one a number of years ago, and I asked the owner if I could check it out. And then I found a member here who bought one. Same deal. And then there are two in Canada that I know of. Ditto. And talking with Roger, he affirmed what I've found out. And there are others who have similar experiences.

Sooooo..... Anyhow regardless of the actual engine code (it's moot point for my purposes
) would the 400 4bbl in a 1970 T-37 or GT-37 automatic have come with the dual snorkle and chrome valve covers? Also it sounds as though there is concensus that at least the automatics came with 16 heads?

Car ran 13.30's@101 with 1.91 60ft times. I can't say for sure if you could get a big valve 400 in a 70 T-37, but if you could, it would have to be a manual trans car,if the info I was given is correct.

The Knafel built magnum 400's were all 4spd car's.
Now that I think more about it, I would have to say "yes" the big valve 400 was offered in the T-37. Try to contact John or Paul Glasgo. Paul's 70 is a tribute "magnum 400" and the Glasgo family were friends with Bill Knafel, I'm sure they would know.

Were the Knafel Magnum 400 built to Knafels own specs or are the "sticker" engineered GT-37's? I have seen the equipment list that these Magnum cars came with and it is pretty much the same as the GT-37 with the optional 400 motor. I have a friend that bought a 70 GT-37 with a 400/4spd combo he found on the Navajo Indian Reservation a few years a go. I will have to ask him what engine code is on the motor. I remember looking at the motor and I do remember that it did not have the ram air exhaust manifolds which would probably mean it has the "wt" engine in it.

you could get the 'standard' 350hp/400 cid in the T-37/GT-37 and Lemans models with a manual transmission. If automatic was ordered a 330hp/400 cid. I have seen -2- PHS with manual trans and 400 and heard of a Lemans Sport convertible.

Years and years ago there were 2 '70 LeMans Sports in Anchorage, AK. Both gold. One w/at and one w/mt. Both 400's. I had a chance to buy both. Aaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't remember a whole lot about under the hood stuff as this was pre '85 and not much was known. Also a couple of '70 GT-37 3 speed 350's, post cars. Boy......sure......wish.......

Last night I looked in some old Pontiac sales books and catalogs I have for the 1970 model year and they stated (remember these are usually published before thay start making the cars) that biggest engine available in the Tempest/Lemans line was the 330hp 400cid with the Turbo Hydro transmission. No mention of 4 speeds being available. When the GT-37 came out at mid year, I think Pontiac's intention was to offer the RA III sans the ram air equipment with the 4spd on the GT-37 but some circumstance kept them from offering this combo so they went with the standard GTO 350 hp power plant with the 4 speed. Kinda like the ill fated LS1 RA IV SD (RA IV top end / RA V bottom end) that was to be available on the 70 1/2 Trans Am. Engine codes were listed but no engines or cars were ever made. All 70 1/2 Trans Ams with the LS1 option came with the GTO 370hp RA IV motor. They even used the same engine codes; WW for 4 speed and I can't remember of the top of my head the code for the auto trans RA IV.

Just to add to the mix here,
Years ago i owned and parted out a 70 Lemans Sport 400 4bbl automatic car without a/c according to the engine codes it was a 330hp engine with 13 heads, single snorkle air cleaner and no chrome lid or valve covers. The car was fairly well optioned with gages and a elecric trunk release. If i had it today i would probably have kept it around for a future project but at the time they werent worth much or sought after. I do still have the complete engine. One odd thing to note here is the trans was a 350 turbo and not a 400, I know this for sure and the car was mostly untouched. . |

Diego, Judgeman, & I can all relate with you how the '70 model (non GTO) 400 4bll A-bodys were built. We've all examined unmolested examples with our own eyes. FWIW, I started compliling the GT-37 survey close to 17 years ago to debunk certain rumors & myths. -The rumor of only "50" '71 1/2's built was the 1st to be debunked. -The rumor of manual trans 366 horse RAIII engine in '70 1/2 GT-37's didn't come long till the late 90's. Have a good idea who the source was. In all actuality, this rumor had to originate with bad info from someone looking at head casting numbers & nothing else. Every original manual trans '70 400 4spd (non GTO A-body) that has been found with original engine has had the 350 horse WT engine. Likewise 400 4bbl auto cars have all had the small valve 16's. Last, all California emissions does on a '70 model A-body or F-body is add a standpipe, charcoal cannister, & different number & calibration Q-jet, not a higher performance factory RA engine. |
