I'm restoring a 68 GTO that had been in a storage for many years. Most of the car is original-just bad shape. It has a underhood light mounted to the firewall with a a striker plate for the plunger switch on the bottom of the hood. It is mounted in a bracket and removable with a recoil wire. The lense is made of glass with red on one side and clear on the other.
None of my books have a light like this one-is it factory, dealer install, or aftermarket? Thanks for the help

All the under hood lights I have seen have have a metal housing covering the lamp and the bulb pops in under the housing thus lighting the area under the firewall where it mounts. They almost look like a street lamp and were both factory and dealer installed options.

The lamp you are describing almost sounds like the reel out accessory lamp that could be placed on the side of the car for changing a spare and these were also both factory and dealer installed. I know these were popular on the full size cars and GP's but seldom seen on a GTO. I did help Judge a white 67 GTO this year though at the Northeast Regionals and his was mounted in the trunk. A picture would help when you can and I'm sure others will chime in here too.
