I am somewhat new to engine mechanics so please bear with me. Recently purchased a 1966 project GTO, and have a couple of questions. Does D port refer to the shape of the opening in the cylinder heads? My heads are 78 and the two middle openings are shaped like back to back D. The other two are more oval in shape. The engine is a 389 out of a 1966 B body. Any suggestions on headers? Thanks

Hi DLDGTO,
Yes you have "D" port heads, the outer exhaust ports are oval and the inner 2 are "D"'s back to back. There are a bunch of companies that make headers to fit your 66 GTO. Most of the "D" port headers are universal in that they will fit most of the "A" body cars (like you have 64-72) and will also fit second gen firebirds (70-7?) not sure on the end year, but you will see when you look them up. "D" port headers have quite a price range from just around $100.00 - to around $500.00 depending on brand. There are also 3 tube and 4 tube headers for the "D" shaped heads, but stick with the 4 tube, much better performance. Pontiacs also have what is called Round port headers where all the exhaust ports are round and take a totally different header. Check out our sponser "Performance Years" they carry a big line of headers for our cars. Hope this helps Mark

Yes, you have D port heads. I would suggest Doug's Headers. You can purchase them right here at Performance Years or from Pacific Performance Racing. You may contact Ken at Pacific Performance Racing at 310-832-4596.

I'll second the motion for Doug's Headers. Put them on my 66 GTO this spring. Really nice quality product. Bought them from PY.

i've seen "headers by doug", "doug's headers", and "doug thorley headers".
i have edelbrock heads and need headers. i've seen where doug's headers are the most highly recommended but when doing a net search find all sorts of hits for "headers" and "doug".

Doug's Headers is the correct company, based in Southern California. Doug Thorley Headers is a very old company owned by Doug's ex wife. You do not want Doug Thorley Headers as they are 35-40 year old designs. I can't comment on the "Headers by Doug" as I have not seen that anywhere yet.

Goatforthree,
Your best bet would be to just order them from PY. They carry the Doug's Headers that everyone is recommending. You can search the web for hours trying to find the best price, but truth is that everyone selling them will be within $10 or $20 of each other. I speak from experience. Dan
