at this moment i'm having a 406 long rod engine build... for my 68 firebird 400..
My engine builder says i should use a torker 2 intake for best performance..... but the car wil only be used for street driving .... mostly just cruising.... so i want to go ... whit a dual plane intake such as a performer RPM People here in the netherlands say it to high and that it doesnt fit under the hood..... I'm planning to use a drop base air cleaner with 3" k&n filter + xstream top... normal gasket... does this fit under the hood ????? thanks for your help... paul verkleij the netherlands 68 firebird ram air 400 99 trans-am ram air ws6 |

Everyone's car is a little different. But, if it helps I measured clearance on my 68 with a stock engine. With a ball of aluminum on top of the cleaner I shut the hood. I did this 2 times, one on the front edge of the top and one in back. The foil crushed to just under 2" at the thinest. With a drop base cleaner you could have a total of about 4" to play with I'd think. Depends on the drop base assembly too!

With a drop base 14" x 3" K&N with filter top and a performer rpm I had 3/4" above my cleaner to the hood with a 1/2" divided spacer under the carb.

I have the same set-up as Ron, with the 1/2" spacer and it clears just fine.If you have your doubts on clearance, buy some play-doh and put it around your air cleaner lid and close it real slow. That will tell you how much room you have.

I also have a performer rpm in my 68 bird. I had a street dominator on the old motor and I'm thinking about going back to it.

I have a Performer with a 1" spacer and my Ram Air pan still fits. It compesses the foam more, but it does fit.

I'm using an RPM intake with 1/2 spacer, 850 Demon, and 3" high a/clr under a std 350 hood.
Engines sit low on 1st gen's like the full size Pontiac's.
