I can't answer your question. But whatever you do, don't cut it. You shouldn't have any shortages of buyers here for that part. No one re-makes it and everyone doing a AT to MT seems in need of that linkage.
What car and tranny is it coming out of?

Three bolts a cotter pin and the whole assy comes out. You will have to manually rotate the collar on the steering column to get the key out and the other way to turn off you backup lights. I have heard on the board of people bypassing the switch on the column and wiring in a separate switch for the backup lights. It may be a good idea, because more than a few times I have forgotten to rotate the collar and driven around with my bu lights on. Bruce

bruce , i think we are talking about two differant things . i want to omit the arm that is at the end of the steering colum that goes down to the linkage . this arm is attached to a tube that is inside of the steering colum . this tube turns and activates the back up light switch. will the steering colum work with out this tube and arm ??

Yes, the linkage can be removed, however your neutral safety switch (unless your new transmission has one attached) and reverse lights will not work.

1157, Your guess is as good as mine. I just left that arm alone, and disconnected the rest that went to the shifter linkage. You will have to alter the column or make sure it stays in the lock position or you will not be able to get the key out of the ignition, and then when you turn on your ignition your reverse lights will be on, so you will have to address that issue.
I'm pretty sure that there is no neutral safety switch. There is a switch on the clutch pedal that interrupts power to the starter unless you have the pedal to the floor.

If your car is new enough to have the steering wheel lock when the car is in park then you need to ensure that the lever is immobilized in a position where it cannot rotate while driving and unexpectedly engage the steering wheel lock. That leaves the neutral safety switch and the reverse light switch to deal with. The trans probably has a sensor for both that you can wire into to restore that functionality.

Mikeb , you are right after looking at the colum again last night , i can see that i need to put a set screw thru the colum into the inner reverse lock out tube to prevent unwanted turning . the tremec trans does have a reverse switch on the side , i have not crossed that bridge . so it does look like i will have some type of reverse switch and back up lights.
thanks guys for all your in put , if we all got together in one room i am sure we could solve the world problems |

The lever does not lock the steering wheel. The key rotating to the off position locks the wheel. Sheeees. I am about done with you guys.
If you put your car in reverse, do you think the steering wheel is going to lock? I hope not. The lever just rotates the collar so the ignition can return to off. You can't get the key out until then.

What year is your car? Mine is a '79. Does yours look like this? Are we talking about 2nd gen firebirds here?

If we are, there is no reverse lock out. It's just an anti-theft device that also activates the reverse lights. If we are talking about the eyelet on the steering column in the engine compartment at the end of the rod coming up from below, that just connects to the collar inside the car.
From everything I've seen and read, the Tremec has an electric switch for backup lights too.
