Anybody out there recall watching the television show C.H.I.P.S and seeing officer Poncharello's (played by Erik Estrada) '70-73 Trans Am? I remember on the show the car was painted gold and had a Formula Hood and a shaker. Is this car still around or in the hands of a collector? I'm not certain of this, but I think this car was the same one used in the movie Corvette Summer, but painted black. Can anybody confirm this? Also, if anybody has pics of the car please post.

If I recall, they destroyed at least one of those cars in the filming of the show, but it reappeared "fixed" later...so I assume there was more than one put together (as is typical with most movies/TV shows).

johnta1,
Thanks for the link to IMCDB. Those are really nice pictures of the car. I am assuming the car started life originally as a Formula. I wouldn't mind building a clone of that car. |

71 fenders with the formula grills AND the TA air extractors.
A little too busy for my taste.....

Not quite to my taste now, either, but when I was a kid watching the show I thought that was a very cool car. On reflection, it probably had a lot to do with my becoming a fan/owner of the '70-'73 body style...

I searched really hard but came up with zip! I remember I did this a couple years ago and had the same result. Maby the guy that built the Batman car knows. I hope it doesn't turn out to have just a 350 in it. It was a cool car. Ponch drove it with excitement.

The pictures are on the link "IMCDB" that johnta1 posted above.
Those aftermarket wheel opening flairs at the rear were called "Foilers". I remember seeing a few T/A's with those on back in the day. I didn't care for them either. |

Top speed on ANY vehicle is governed by weight,HP,RPM @ redline & rear axle ratio.
(just because the speedo read 160mph didn't mean that the car it was installed in would go there) A 78 T/A with a 180 HP 400 & a 2:56 rear end will likely have a HIGHER top speed than a 70-74 T/A with 400 or 455 (300+HP) engine & 3:42 gears. Early 70's T/A top end suffered from a DRAG RACE drivetrain in a ROAD RACE body/chassis. 120 MPH was about all you got unless you ignored the redline.(this is why we have so many NON-numbers matching early T/A's A 5 speed or some type of overdrive would have been a GREAT HELP,but didn't materialize until our FAVORITE F-car platform(70-81) was DEAD. |

A couple of years ago when my son was born I was working the night shift getting up with him to feed him. I would watch late night TV during these feedings and I think it was WTBS that used to show the Chips re-runs. One night I caught the beginning of the episode when they totalled Ponch's Formula/TA at a car race. I threw a tape in the VCR and taped it! Later I went back and did a lot of slo mo and frame freezing to see what was going on with that car. It definitely wasn't a real TA. On the driver's side they mounted a passenger side TA air extractor on upside down. In one scene the hood was up (John was checking for a bomb) and the shaker was fastened to the hood. The hood bird on the formula hood was from a '78-'79 TA which would have been brand new at the time.
I've been meaning to get a video card to hook up to my vcr to get all these great images and video off of but I've never gotten around to it.
