need help with left rear brake light
I am having problems with my left rear brake lights. Every once in awhile when I put on the brakes. The driver side brake light does not work. I just put in a new wiring harness from out host.
Question: 1. Did anyone else have this problem? 2. Could it be the wire harness under the carpet? 3. What should I look at next? thanks fb66 |

When I have that problem, its because socket for the light bulb isn't gounding against the frame of the car. So I have to move it around a little bit to get a good connection. I found a LED kit that I'm going to install, that should help and make the brake lights a little brighter.

Does the directional work on that side? If the directional doesn't work either, than it's the bulb, socket, or the wiring going back. If the directional works but the brake does not, it's probably the directional signal switch.

I had a similiar problem in my 67... When I applied the brakes, both rear left turn signal/brake bulbs would short out, but only when I had the left turn signal on....
I replaced the sockets, checked the ground and traced it to the wiring harness underneath the carpet... I was lucky and found one on Ebay for 12 bucks... I would also try replacing the brake-light switch on the pedal.... It's relatively cheap and easy to do, I have had those go bad on me as well..... |

66 GTO BRAKE LITE PROBLEM
JUST FINISHED MY 66 GOAT RESTO.HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WHEN I WAS DRIVING IT. FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS COMMON. IT'S THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH BECAUSE ALL OF THE REAR WIREING GOES THRU THIS SWITCH THEN TO THE REAR.EVERYTHING ON THE FRONT WOULD WORK ,THATS WHAT WAS CONFUSING. BOUGHT A NEW SWITCH ,COMES COMPLETE WITH HARNESS FOR $75 FROM USA PARTS,FIT RIGHT IN AND SOLVED THE PROBLEM.DO NOT BUT A REPAIR KIT BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO REPAIR THE OLD ONE BUY THE COMPLETE SWITCH.
WHEN YOU HAVE TIME CHECK OUT MY WEB SITE AT FREDSGTO.COM LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT FRED SPENDIN MONEY HAVIN FUN FINALLY GOT ER DONE |

Also, check the ground.
I had the same issue. I ended up running a extra wire from the tail light housing to the body just to make sure I had a good ground. It solved my problems. The tail light housing grounds to the body using the bezel studs and spin nuts, mine had fresh thick paint on the studs & body surface insulating the stud. (At least I thought that was my problem) Also the new gaskets I put in probably didn't help the ground. Havent had a problem since. P.S. I learned that star washers and dielectric grease on all ground wire points is alway's a good preventive measure in fighting electrical gremlins. Good luck,

When I turn on the lights the rear lights work. The blinker works on the driver side. The brake light comes on sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes.
67 Tempest, Where do I get a brake light switch on the pedal? How did you run a ground wire from your tail light housing? Do you have any pictures? Fred, Would our host have the the wire harness that you installed? Bob with 66, I am not sure where the ground for the rear wiring is located. I do not recall any wires going to the body for the ground? It has to be one of the thing you guys talked about. I need to do some looking. Thanks, fb66 |

Fred. Question: 1. How hard was it to install in your car? 2. Are there special tools that I will need. thanks, fb66 |

Fullback,
My car is without tilt, I replaced my switch. The only special tool you will need will be a steering wheel puller. The switch is mounted with screws, the chrome lever has (1) screw and the switch wiring just plug's in. You do have to remove the lower column mount and slide the wire cover off the column to take the old switch out and to load the new switch. I replaced mine a couple of years back, maybe someone else will remember any other things that need to be done. It didn't take long to do.
