I agree,Sandblasting shouldnt disturb the frame numbers,at least it didnt mine.probably filled. Never heard of any additional vins on frame anyone else? Man the quarters are another story, would make me want to sandblast the guy that did it. Ive read articles on different types of media and heard in unskilled hands not only sand can damage precious sheetmetal.Got me chicken, Will let the individual show me what hes got on some junk (camaro parts) first.

I talked to my attorney today and didn't get anywhere. It will cost me more to sue that I would probably recover. Time to grin and bear it.

The numbers on the frame were barely readable before it was sandblasted. I assure you that sandblasting can remove numbers because it did on my frame. There was a lot of surface rust and some scale on the frame so it's not like the stampings were factory fresh before it was sandblasted. Anyhow, the damage is done and it's time to move on. I've almost got the frame finished anyway.

Body work is next and I am confident that it is going to turn out ok.

Trim Tag is a different issue but I am pretty sure I have that resolved now as well.

I hope my screwups help keep someone else from making the same mistakes. Anyway, I appreciate everyone's help. Thanks.

for sheet metal you want to media blast it- its a bit more expensive and not everybody does it but it doesnt warp thin sheet metal like glass or sand does
glass beading is much of the same effect of sand but is more expensive and leaves a finer finish, sand is a little more powerfull

Dave,
You don't need an attorney to just talk to the sandblaster about your concerns. As you stated you don't really know what damage there was under the bodywork/bondo that was on your car. At least he should pay you for the repro trim tag as it should be pretty clear that they damaged/destroyed the tag while blasting.

Would still like to see a picture of that trim tag.

Actually, I did talk to the power coater and he offered to pay for the trim tag and any damage. Since I can't prove the body damage and since the frame wasn't perfect to begin with, I told him I would split the cost of the trim tag and call it a done deal. I think that's fair. I just want to put it behind me and get the car done.

First off - I'm really sorry to hear about your car.

Sometimes things are a lot worse behind the paint an filler than they look when you buy a car. I just picked up a '72 Lemans Sport that had a 1/4 put on in the past. I could see that it had bondo and two little bubbles at the bottom. I planned on replacing it w/a NOS 1/4 I got before picking up this car.

I decided to strip it just to see what things looked like under the paint and mud. OMG - The thing was toast. It was really messed up and had a really big rot hole in the bottom. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect but I was blown away by how bad it looked once I got it nekked. This is a AZ car to boot.

Sounds like you're in a whole other situation but you never know what things looked like until you get it down to steel.

It's really amazing what people cover up with bondo and paint. I have a 65 convertible that someone really got creative on. I knew the passenger quarter had been worked because of the bondo cracks but I had no idea how bad it really was. Turns out someone had cut a huge hole in the quarter (14" x 21") and then they "shaped" and riveted an old seal kist ice cream sign onto the quarter. As if that wasn't enough, they used GALLONS of bondo to "make it pretty". I have a chunk of Bondo from that car that is an inch and a half thick. Impressive huh?

As for my 70 GTO, the powder coater came through with some cash and everything is working out ok. I made some mistakes on this car and I hope others won't make the same mistakes I did.
