I know this is probably a "rookie" question, but does this dyno not seem low for this combo? I was expecting an honest 575hp+ out of this, but the engine only pulled 540@5900rpm.
maybe with a carb/intake change, 575 can be achieved... 428 + .060 = 440cid 74cc KRE 326/525 heads 11.0 : 1 compression, 210psi (hot) 255/263 @ .050", 108LSA, installed @ 104, 594/610 lift@valve solid flat tappet camshaft, .016" valve lash torker II, matched to fel-1233, HP 830cfm Holley Hooker SC 1.75" primary, 3" X-pipe exhaust MSD Pro-billet distributor, 6AL, Blaster2, 31deg timing I guess my question is...is the TorkerII and 830HP hurting me that much? Btw, if anyone knows, is KRE's "house HP950" just a stock HP, or is it modified in any way? |

somethings just not right with your combo.Good HP for RPM but engine should make peak HP at higher RPM IMO.Tom

Did you play with jetting and timing? Is that all the timing KRE's need? Did you try any spacers? Can you post the dyno sheet?

timing was checked at 34, 32, 30, 29, and finally 31 where max power was made.
jetting was checked, coming out to 78/84 lash was checked, initial was .024", made +12hp @ .016" engine was dynoed w/1" open spacer <--still on the engine now |

The fact it picked up by tightening the lash is telling me it may be a bit undercammed,as reducing the lash makes the cam seem "bigger" to the engine.
What ratio rockers are on this? Might also try installing that cam straight up and pulling it again,this also makes the cam seem "bigger" to the engine. If it keeps "picking up" as you tighten up the lash,and retard the cams ICL,and add more rocker ratio,likely it's time for more cam. If that's the case,I'd go up about 4-6 degrees on duration for the next cam and start with it advanced 4 degrees like this one is. Quote:

What has already been said. And I would like to add, based on my experience with these heads.
Add about five degrees of duration and put them on a MUCH wider lobe separation, like 114-115. Put the cam in straight up. Add a Victor intake and a 1050 Dominator or the biggest 4150-style carb you can find. The peak hp should be around 6300-6500rpm with those heads. I think you could see 650hp with the right combo.

Am I wrong... I thought NUNZI made 760 with a 440 a 4bbl on gas with RA4 heads...in the 90's?????

With your heads and cam, I would've expected peak HP at a higher RPM. As the RPM climbs, even though the torque is falling, the engine will continue to show more power.
SC is correct concerning lash, not iron clad but a good indicator. |

You can't completely compared dynoes to diferent dynos. My current 455 E head pump gas motor on a Stuska dyno put out 525hp @6200, less than the Moroso slide says it has from the mph. It even had less TQ than HP. How many dynoes do that, usually they are way above on TQ and way above the Moroso slide once in the car. It's pushing a 3750 lb car to 10.99@ 124.5. Torker II and 850 DP with a Shaker.
Using dyno numbers as absolute is like using flow bench numbers as absolute. great tuning tool against itself but not exactly against the one across the street. |

KRE's HP950 is pretty much right on the money. I used it about this time last year as part of our testing when I had my engine out for a cam change and "freshening up". It made 2 less HP than my Q-jet, which is dialed in exactly for my engine. We just tried it because we weren't getting the power we thought the engine should have been making, so we installed an MSD billet distributor (lost slightly less than 1hp) and KRE's HP950 (lost 2hp), over my HEI and Q-jet.
I also tested a flat solid cam last year, and found that even at 240/248/112, with Comp's "very best lobes", it made 22 ft lbs and 10 hp LESS than my Crower 60919 (231/240//113) flat hydraulic cam. It would have taken almost another 10 degrees @ .050" to make about the same power. It was my first experience with flat solid grinds. We immediately went to a hydraulic roller, but, if I were to test any more of them, I'd pick them about 20 degrees @ .050" bigger than I thought I needed. We ran the T-II set-up on my engine, and although it made the highest peak hp, the RPM made a LOT more average power. It's really all about the combination of parts. My guess is that the solid cam on a 108 shut the power down a tad early in the rpm range?......Cliff

Sorry I'm not trying to highjack this thread but I have a question for Cliff R. What do you have done to an HEI that it makes 1 more horsepower than a billet MSD. The reason I'm asking is I'm getting ready to buy a distribtor and if I can get an HEI instead of a billet MSD I will.

Your cam sounds (exactly) like the one Bullet recommended for my 433 engine.
However I have only 9.8:1 compression, and 255cfm heads, and asked them to recommend a cam with max HP at 6,500rpm. Based on them being correct (I have not tried it yet) I would say your camshaft is too "small" for your better flowing heads and higher C.R. I agree with ScreamingChief, try a camshaft with more duration. Good luck and have fun!

My DUI HEI and a MSD billet with a 7AL box on the dyno were identical.
I heve picked up without an air cleaner. I forgot my longer carb stud for my setup to do that at the track. After clicking 10.99 and 11.00s I figured that was fast enough. |

We got 584 HP @ 5700 rpm with 464 cid, KRE 290 heads and a slightly smaller cam than yours. I think the 108 LSA with the 104 ICl is whats costing you a few ponies. Check out the dyno results on our website for more info.

IMHO those 1 11/16 butterflies in the 830 carb are not helping. Even though your combo calculates between an 800-830 cfm because of the high efficiency of the engine you are going to pick up considerably with between an 850-1050 carb. At the minimum I'd try to borrow an 850 or 950 to see how it reacts.
I agree with the camshaft being to small, so to speak. rather than change cams just test the larger carb first and then try installing "straight" up. You may gain a few HP with a Victor but the TQ2 is a decent intake as well. JD

I use that same cam but mines a 455.My combo will next summer will be 455,Ud 255/263 with 1.65 rockers,victor with a dom. carb and 315 butler eheads,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,not that far off from your combo.Hopefully soon it will hit the dyno for a comparo.That cam is supposed to be installed at 102 icl.Mine came in at 103 so i left it.The middle of this year i tried it at 101 icl at the track,it seemed to pull better at 103 and run its best times so put it back at 103 ICL..Mine also ran its best at 30- 31 total degrees.Your running the exact combo i used to run except for the heads.Ive been using #62 heads that flowed 251.Im with you,with that combo i would of been looking for at least another 25 hp and more trq than 537 lbs.
