i have a 66 lemans conv, i have seen those kick panel speakers around. has anybody tried them ? any good ideas on where to put some speakers without cutting my car up. thanks

For what its worth...

I put a set of the aftermarket kick panels with speakers in my 66 GTO, using some good speakers (not the ones that came with the kick panels). They were out of the car and for sale on ebay 1 day later. Couple of reasons - since the kick panels don't seal at all, the sound from the good quality speakers was very thin, almost no bass at all. Also, on the driver's side they are almost wedged against the parking brake pedal - close to zero clearance. So here's one vote against the aftermarket kick panels with speakers - good idea but the execution left something to be desired.

the kickpanel speakers can be worked to be fine
i'm skeptical about having them under the buckets, they'd be pointing straight down and vibrate your arse?


as oldbird mentioned - ditch the speakers they come with and put in aftermarket ones

it really helps to put some material behind where the kickpanels go
they make plenty of soundproofing stuff that you could put back there to try and make it an effective box, to help direct the sound


you probably won't get much bass out of those small speakers
i once had a sub under the rear deck to help with that - but it's a lot of work

Agreed, Just do something like the factory and make some sort of box to mount under the the deck lid filler/header panel. Hang it from the upper portion facing the interior of the car and clearing the lid rods then you don't have to have those fugly kick panels.
I second NOT putting them under the seat.

just completed my 66 gto resto , check it out at fredsgto.com.i installed kickpanel speakers,pioneer, and they are great. fit was excellant and the sound is awesome. got mine thru ames as our host was out of stock and i needed them now,you know how that goes.there are holes in the metal package deck and that is where i mounted 2 9" pioneers.i removed the mesh from the new package deck and drilled a new set of holes in the masonite for the speakers then reglued the mesh.also i put a replacment dual cone speaker in the dash, again excellant fit ,uses the same mounting bracket as the original. can't sat enough about the sound. the dual cone came from our host.

I love 'em in my '67 Cutlass convertible. I followed the seller's recommendation and put some Dynomat on the back of the panels to prevent the panel from absorbing so much of the speaker's vibration. They sound great, with plenty of base.
