Thumbs up BLOWN NITRO PONTIAC IN HOT ROD

Anyone else see it. I thought it was Steve B at first but saw the name Bill Taylor from Ca. Cool set up. Love the blower manifold. Lots of good ideas. Looks like it would be a good test bed for the new cranks coming out. So now we have at least 2 Nitro players in the Pontiac world. Good deal!

What month is the issue? I don't subscribe to Hot Rod (haven't in 15 years) but I'd like to see that.

And people thought I was crazy for running a cast crank. I got my Hot Rod magazine and when I turned the pages and saw that Pontiac, I had to read that article thoroughly. Blown alcohol and NITRO....80% at that!!!!! The article is titled "CRAZY"........appropriately so! Cast crank and stock block and a relatively mild combo that seemed to hold together for years without problems til his competiveness caught up with him. I wish him nothing but luck with his newer engine.....he's gonna need it. I don't see why he is trying to prove a point with stock pieces now that GOOD pieces are now available....... unless his financial situation is like the rest of us. Still cool to see a blown Pontiac in Hot Rod!!

I haven't seen the article yet, but he used to run a blown 455 (stock block) in a Verdoro green '68 GTO. The front end was fiberglass and was not painted yet. He upgraded to E-heads a year or two ago. He lives somewhere around Oceanside or Carlsbad.

Until I see the article, I'm not buying it. Stock block with cast crank on 80%? That and there's no such thing as a "relatively mild combo" when dealing with nitromethane (especially at 80% loads).

Is this a cackle fest car that never does more than idle? Or is it actually raced? A cackle fest car holding together with what Bill mentioned I can believe...but a race car?

If you haven't bought a copy of Hot Rod for a while, get your butt out and get one.

David Freiburger pulled that magazine out of the fire about 2 years ago and made it better than ever.

You won't see Pontiacs on every page, but if you open your mind a bit I PROMISE you will love it.

Freiburger was either at Car Craft or PHR, I can't remember which...but I liked his style when he was there. I enjoyed the buildup he was doing to make his '69 Mopar (Road Runner?) into a track car...even though it didn't turn out as well as planned. He's a gearhead in the truest sense, and seems to connect well with gearhead readers.

Default Just got this from another board...

I asked about this on another board and here's what was reported from the article:

I got the issue in the mail today
1968 GTO
cast block 455
cast crank
Edelbrock heads
6-71 bird on alky ran 8.80@154
then put 80% nitro BIG BOOOOOM 20 feet off starting line!!
Now this cat is doing the same to a 400 block and cast crank.

Pontiac parts ought to be worth more $ when this dude is done blowin his stuff up.

Dave

I don't think Mr. Taylor is a serious nitro' player. Car ran well on alky though.

Steve B & I saw that car at Pamona last year. Ran well, They were at Bakersfield when we ran the 6.77. They were at the "Pontiac Heaven" pits several times during the weekend. The car was sold less engine & trans a while back. Was listed on Ebay before it was sold. They are going in another direction. They are still firm belivers in the Pontiac cast crank tho.

Mo, New ride, not door car, but were looking at rail or flopper on nitro was discussed. They have a long way to go.

I met those guys at the POCI event at Fontana last year. The car was very rough, stock frame with the cage set up, sat up real tall and had the back wheels sticking out. Kind of the 70's look. Glass front end and a factory block. He said it was completely filled with concrete and he was pushing 30 lbs of boost. If I remember right it was an 871 with a hat. That was a mean a$$ sounding engine and if he could have gotten it to hook he would have had some incredible times. I don't remember the name on the intake but it was made like a Hogans and a very nice piece. All of the guys that were with their operation were really nice and heavily into pushing factory parts past their imaginable life expectancy. I have the Intake builders number buried somewhere. I believe he was around Oceanside, Ca.

Even 20% Nitro would have done the same thing w/ the cast crank!

The intake he is running is a Wenzler first gen tunnel ram w/ a blower top.

Neat article but I really wish they would do a story on someone like Langer, Rex, Jack etc. that make over 1,000 HP on nuts & bolts.

Thumbs up

"Even 20% Nitro would have done the same thing w/ the cast crank!"

I know a local guy who "tipped the can" in his blower motor. Didn't break anything, but did hammer some parts. 15%, I believe.

"The intake he is running is a Wenzler first gen tunnel ram w/ a blower top."

I had posted about the need for a better blower manifold in the past. That looks like a great alternative to having a custom one made, like a Hogan.

Important thing to take from that atricle is how much power that motor could make AND survive as a Blown Alcohol motor.

The article has a subtitle as "the World's Quickest Blown-Fuel Pontiac". I'm in the process of sending an email to Hot Rod to correct them. As MechanicKeith mentioned, we saw them run in Pomona and the stopped by our pits at the HR Reunion. Nice guys. Why they think a cast crank can withstand that kind of power is puzzling. They have already proven that theory with a full-color picture of their crank in multiple pieces. The definition of "crazy" is someone who continually does the same thing but expects a different result. These guys seem hell-bent on proving that...
