Default Rally IIIs

Anybody ever read or heard why Pontiac skipped over the name Rally III and went right to Rally IV?

The styled wheel you mentioned is the Rally IV, Mike. Produced 1979-1982 or '83
My pet name for them is "Y stars" for the Y shaped spokes.

I think the Rally III must have been a prototype wheel that never made it to production.

What was the the steel Rally wheel that was used on early 3rd-gen base Firebirds called? For some reason I thought those were the Rally IV. I'll have to go look for my '82 Firebird brochure ...

Pontiac did not skip the Rally III wheel. The Rally III was used on the 1975 Pontiac Astre SJ. See attached pics. The Rally IV became available in 1979 on GP's, G/A's and Lemans series. The Rally V became available on 1982 Firebirds.

According to my 1971 Pontiac Advance Information Ordering Guide (dated May /70)

Page 27 lists New Options & Accessories:

Rally III Wheels, code 478
(478 is the sales code for Honeycomb Wheels UPC PO5)

Available ALL models,EXCEPT Trans am,Catalina,Catalina Brougham,Bonneville & Grandville. Unique Honeycomb design!

How's that for Trans am TRIVIA?
SOMEBODY changed their mind on the Trans am application & wheel name.

That is the ONLY reference to RALLY III's as Honeycombs I've seen.

Short lived concept!

If memory serves me correctly, the Rally III wheels on the Astre's was a polly cast wheel like the Honeycombs. Basicly the standard Vega 13 hole rally (the type with the small dog dish hub caps & trim rings) with polly cast spokes & a pontiac arrow head center cap. The same wheel was offered on the Monza's to at least 78. The only unique wheels offered on the Astre/Sunbird was the 13" 4 lug Snowflake wheels 77-80. All other wheels were variations of the standard Chevy wheels with differnt center caps or hub caps.
Be carful on what you refer to as a Rally II's as the 4 spoke steel rally's on the Astre are refered to as Rally II's in my PHS documentation. Weird.
More of the usless info I have aquired after buying the 78 Sunbird Safari & 77 Astre Formula!!!!!
