A350 Turbo is the easiest, a direct bolt in if your car is a column shift. If you have a console, you can get linkage that will make it a bolt in.

GTO1 is correct, a TH350 short tail is the best way to go. I took the 300 out of my 64 when I restored it and put in a TH350 and glad I did. The 3 speed makes the car a lot more fun to drive. I put a shift kit in it and get my kicks chearping the tires from 1st to 2nd.

Shiftworks makes a great kit to convert a 2 speed selector over to a 3 speed yet allows you to keep the car looking like a 2 speed. You can go into my site and see a link to shiftworks website.

Good luck

Jim

If you go with a th400 you will need to modify the tranny mount and most likely alter the drive shaft.

All you have to do with the T-400 is move the cross member back, the trans mount is OK. You will probably also have to shorten the drive shaft a small amount, but it is close.

Unless you are pulling serious hp and torque numbers and have a stout rear end and fat sticky tires, a built TH350 and decent converter will be all you need. It's a direct bolt in. I bought one for my '64 GTO from Jegs. I think it was about $950 which included $99 worth of shipping. It was one of the less expensive transmissions they had available.

go with a 400, its not that hard to do, drill 4 holes move the cross back and use a drive shaft from the car you got the 400 from, chances are it will work great. unsure of all years that the shaft will work so take a tape measure with ya. but any good junk yard will have that shaft you need.

A bolt in is to use the drive shaft from a '67 GTO that came with a T-400.

Default Trans install

I put a 2004r in my gto fit great bolt in except had to move rear mount back 3 in and re drill. It works great have 355 rear ,can use orig shifter with the shift works kit. You have the best of two worlds. Can run hot in drive then cruise when the converter locks up in over drive. Hope this helps

How does the THM 350 downshift when the gas pedal is floored?.........the ST 300 in my '64 uses a kick-down switch mounted on a bracket off the carb base
