67 GTO horn fix
I am trying to determine what might be the problem with my horn set. They sound weak. I realize that it may be the relay, but in order to trouble shoot this problem, I have tried to put 12 volts thru each horn to see what happens. I hooked up wires directly to the battery terminals. I got some sound out of them, but they still sound weak. Is this the correct way to test them? What else should I do?

that is correct way, if both have some sound, but weak, suggest you remove each, gently air blow them out for any crap, then WD 40 inside, let sit, then jumper to each quickly in short bursts to work diaphram, then try with power connected. Sounds better, try another soak, if not, get another horn.

If they have adjustor screws, try 'tweaking' the adjustments while they're 'honking'.

I went through that too, as most here probably have. After 40 years or so they just bite the dust. I got some new ones from Summit and they sound great. Unless you're doing a show car, of course that wouldn't do.

I couldn't get them to work using Engineer's suggestion so I bought a new set from OPG. I haven't hooked them up yet. I'll do it this weekend.

Summit only had one type (thats not an air horn).....looks like it wouldnt work.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Did you buy those from OPG that are $100.45? I was hoping to find something about half that price somewhere.... Last edited by lampoon; 02-02-2007 at 10:11 AM. |

Had to let Raymond, the sunglassed dog, go. Long story...
I had mounted the old horns back up and tried them again. They sounded weak then quit completely. I have installed the new horns and I am not getting any sound yet. I have mounted them correctly and plugged in the electrical connectors. Do I need to wire them to ground somehow or should I start checking the relay? I looked thru the books that I have and didn't find anything about wiring the horns. Thanks. |

Usually the horns are grounded thru the mount, so yes, you need to ground them well, or use a good sized jumper wire bolted to the horn metal and connect it back to the battery neg.

Are the ones you bought from OMG metal or plastic?
The ones offered through our host appear about the same price but I cant find what they are made out of. $9 will get you a new horn relay. Part # GME59 Last edited by lampoon; 02-08-2007 at 12:50 PM. |

They are as heavy as the originals. I'll check to see if a magnet sticks tonight when I get home. Can I get a good horn relay at autozone or checker?

Thanks George. I'll ground them back to the battery tonight to see if I get any sound out of them.

Autozone has a GP- Sorensen Horn Relay - part # HR54
Goes for $5.99 It shows to fit the 67 GTO..... Ask at the counter to be sure. It crosses though. |

The front cover of the horns are thick plastic. All the rest is metal, it seams.
I got the new horns to work by running a ground wire from the loop on the outside edge if the horn to the radiator support. They sound great. I painted the header panel this weekend. So now I am ready to bolt everything on to the front end, cover and install the driver seat and I am ready to roll!!! I'll definately be ready for Pontiac Heaven! Maybe even with the new power disc brakes. |
