77-heads on a ´66 389.
I read in a book that there were a pre-production ´66 GTO made with 77-heads instead of the 093. Has this been comfirmed by anyone and does anyone know about such a car?

Hi Lars. I've never heard that one, in fact I have heard the opposite--that the 093 heads were available in the late 65 model years and MAY have made it through on some 65's. I do know that for years the 093 head was considered correct in the restored class @ GTOAA because it was listed as the service replacement for the 77 head.

Just a follow-up on the subject. This was mentioned in a book called "Original Pontiac GTO" on page 33. There is a burgundy "pilot-production" hardtop with original 77-heads instead of 093.

I asked because everything you read in a book don´t have to be true. There are a lot of unverified data circulating and this might be one of those.

Makes sense. Being the skeptic that I am makes me wonder why Thomas De Mauro thinks this hardtop might be a pilot production car. If the casting date is way off... Maybe this post should be a quest for the earliest casting dates for the 093 and/or the latest dates for the 77s??
