Question Rhoades Lifters effect on Torque Converter?

Is this something that should be taken into account when selecting your stall speed? Do you go with the bleed down rating or should you go with the pumped up specs?

These lifters affect your idle, vacuum, power band I,m sure it would be a factor in choosing your stall speed .
Any input Anyone?

Depending on your performance level Rhoades lifters could allow you to use a lower stall converter and perform better than with a higher stall converter without them. Rhoades give you better off idle power and widen your torque curve.

rhoades lifters on a given cam will raise the stall speed by producing more torque.
rhoades lifters should be mandatory on any car equipped with a camshaft.
mike like rhoades.

Thanx Guy`s this a street car and drivabilty is important, the cam is [email protected] in/[email protected] ex the Rhoades will make it appear smaller till they pump up.
I,m also using 1.65 Roller Rockers which add a couple of more degrees of duration plus add some lift.
I was wondering just where to set your stall at?
Crane Cam # 283951
3.73 gears
3850 lbs car weight
10.5 to 1 CR
800 Edelbrock AVS carb
200r4 Bowtie OD tranny
72cc E-heads
RPM intake
I,m thinking 2500rpm stall?

Be carefull of to much stall with overdrive don't want to be cruising in 4th at your stall rpm. Unless it's lock up. ( I have almost the same combo .You need torque to pull from low rpm's.

Good point,I will definitly be using a lock-up TQ conveter.
I should have added this is a 428 bored .030.
8point how does your combo get around?

I have been running these trannies since the late 80's with lockups in various old Pontiacs. In addition to the other comments, you don't want to run too aggressive a cam with the lockup convertor (another vote for the Rhoads lifters). Make sure your normal cruising speed in lockup mode is above the "choppy" part of the cam. Otherwise, you will spend your time trying to control your head from bobbing front to back.

Reminds me of the sensation of lugging a 4 speed manual...

overkillphil, this weird thing called a "shifter" will let one take the car out of overdrive to avoid lugging it down.

The stall speed you desire will depend on how street friendly you want the car to be. I would say somewhere between 2500-3000 max.

Billz428, I have a 400 set up like Cliff Ruggles dose them. 60916 cam roads lifters also ,3.42 posi , 200R-4 , 2000 stall lock up with dash switch to un lock.
I have no problem runing 65-70 in lock up at about 1900 rpm, but to floor it from there it dose not realy kick you in the pants, so I just drop it into drive.
Your 428 may have just enought torque to overcome this.
If I'am at 55 I can drop to 2-nd and realy go.
Using the lock up switch is like having an extra gear ,can feel the difference when I turn it on at 55 rpm's drop
Have to say that at 55 it feels a little better to be at 2500 in drive. But I know gas milage is worse.
Last show I went to was 105 mi away, coming back on north way there was a lot of 60;s cars headed home all in the slow lane. I was with the modren cars in the fast lane going by them at 75 turning about 2200.

Mike, you make a good point, albiet obvious. But some of my customers that I have installed these transmissions in over the years don't think like us. So I prefer to go with "sound engineering" in certain cases.

Thanx everybody! The tranny is a level 3 from BowtieOD, good unit so far,it will be fun to test it behind the TQ of the 428 this spring.
With the lifters having the cam appear smaller and the Converter not locking till 45mph 2400 to 2500 looks like my best bet .
I will either go with BTO unit or this outfit from Alabama "PTC" I believe, good comments about PTC but not a whole lot for BTO at all.
I contacted RedNeck and their TQ for the 200r4 they would not recommend, not up to the Pontiac output and they offered no upgrade.

should come in at @ 600 rpm above where cam comes in. I usually go for a little more to hit the tires harder. If car launches @ 3K...lifters should be pumped up by then. The Rhoades lifters I ran came on quick at the hit of the throttle. JMHO. Ron
