What was the proper/correct fan setup for a 68 GTO with air. Did a search on past threads.
My car has air but no fan clutch. Mostly an original car so am surprised to be missing the clutch if it is suppose to be there without exception. Should it be a 7 blade with fan clutch and no spacer? All factories build it this way or did some leave out the clutch. How much of the fan resides under the shroud? Thanks, John |

I agree that it should have a clutch fan. As for why your's don't, it wasn't uncommon for the clutch fan to be replaced with a solid style back then. Some people felt that the clutch fan wasn't a good setup.

The fan is a 5 blade too. Is it suppose to be 7 blade or 5 blade?
I'll look for date codes to determine if it is original or not. Thanks, John |

On how far fan should stick into the shroud, I see anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 of the fan blades width should be "in".
Jim hands book says Half the fan if that sways you one way or the other. Thats what I'm going to shoot for when I reassemble mine with a clutch fan and "stock" fan. Gotta get rid of this POS flexfan thats there now. BTW, Anyone got and extra fan laying around? ( sorry not looking to highjack the thread just came to mind I shoudl ask) Howard

Should be a 19"-7 blade clutch fan.
1/2 in out usually works best. Alittle either way should work fine. I use flex fans on mine(19"-7 bld). Installed about 1/3 in. When running, it flex's inward 1/2 way.

Thanks all. Allan, since yours differs from the specification I wonder if mine does too. Mine is a November 67 build.
Mine has the spacer and a 5 blade steel fan but I couldn't find any dates on the fan or spacer. The alternator is orignal and most other parts on the car too so I torn on replacing the spacer and adding a clutch. The woman had the car in Florida for about 30yrs. Don't think she would alter the car in any way and kept all receipts for work done and I don't see this being replaced. Any other cases of discrepency too the specification? Thanks, John |

The spacer measures 2.5" and the fan is half under the shroud.

I too have a non clutch fan with spacer.
2.5 " spacer, 4 blade fan. Tried to mount a clutch fan this weekend. The 2.5" spacer will NOT work with a 7 blade clutch fan. Fan/clutch is almost touching the radiator core. 1.5" would be perfect. That would put the fan blades for the 7 blade ~2/3 inside the shroud. Then have to figure out how to get bolts through the clutch fan flange and the spacer if they are 2" long...... |
