Does anyone have any experience with removing a tilt steering column from a 68 GTO? I am going to be repainting my dash and would like to get it out of the way. Also, is there any way to adjust them in the in/out direction? Mine seems to be about 1/4" too close to the dash. Thanks!

To remove the column, remove the two nuts at the flange
on the rag joint at the top of the gear box, remove the bolts that hold the
flange plate that surrounds the base of the column under the dash from the
firewall, and remove the two nuts that hold the column to the bottom of the dash(after the trim plate below the column at the bottom of the dash has been removed.) Unplug any electical connections on the column if it has any and remove the column. There are slots on the bracket that holds the column to the dash that allow adjustment front and back, but be aware that moving
the column in relation to the dash changes the gap between the steering
wheel and the housing below the wheel on a 68 model. You will probably
find that you will be able to adjust the column little if any at all without
encountering problems with the wheel rubbing the column shroud. If you have
a column shifter instead of a dualgate on the floor, you will need to disconnect
the rod from the steering column under the hood that goes to the transmission. There
is no shift linkage to disconnect if you have a manual tramnsmission CORRECTION:
Come to think of it, the columns that I've worked on where the position that the
column was bolted to the dash affected the gap behind the steering wheel were
64's 65's and 66's. I think starting in 67 the lower shaft telescopes and you can
move the steering column up and down at the slots where it bolts to the bottom
of the dash with no consequence.
