There were various words of caution before you entered the swamp. But now that you've fended off a majority of the alligators it appears you are seeing the project come your way. Keep up the good work. There is a great deal of pride and satisfaction to be had.

Well the doors are cleaned and to the body guy. Some days this hobby makes me crazy, and some days I love it. Today is a love day. I had some holes in the whindshield pillars. On the drivers side they were not too bad, so I filled them with weld and they came out great. The passenger side however was a different animal. I wound up cutting a piece out of the chunk of car I bought and welding it in the pillar, it came out great. It's really a fun thing to play around in areas no one will ever see. Takes the pressure off.

I've been busy on the car but not too much of it has been work that is visible. A lot of cleaning and painting inside the qtrs, vent areas, etc. Rebuilding, cleaning and priming the door hinges. I took a stab at the trunk pans and decided they are beyond my abilities (I got a little warping) and I don't think they will look as nice As I want them too so I will defer them to the body guy. The doors are done and look great. I've spent a lot of time cleaning up the door frames etc. It's beginning to look like a car again. I got the dash and cowl back from the stripper this week and spent today cleaning them up and getting a coat of primer on them, along with the windshield pillars etc. This dash is the best of the three. There are some areas that will need to be filled but they are not deep (just where the rust removed in stripping left pits) but I was able to remove it from the chunk of car I had with the windshield channel intact. It's been almost a year since it's had a dashboard so I'm excited. I'll be more excited when I drop this down on the finished frame and pass the baton (give it to the body guy) for awhile.

Glad to see you're still at it. Looking quite fine.

It's quite reasonable to subcontract some of the project out. And I give you serious credit for effort made/work done and not getting burned out. But judging from the excellent quality of your work you COULD do the trunk pans. Your welds are just a little long(hot) and the wire speed is too fast for sheet metal trunk pans. That's why you're warping them. You'd be suprised what smaller (cooler) tacks would do. And one thing about trunk pans... semi-gloss black and spatter paint covers A LOT of sins. I'd bet your body man won't do them as nice as you would.... you just won't see it.

I agree with Karl. If you can weld that window channel, you can do trunk pans.
Great job Gene. We can all thank you in Florida, and Bill in Alaska, for inspiration when we think our project is too big.

OK Its been a while. I sort of put the car on the back burner over the last 6 months or so. My body guy is finally ready for the car so back to the front burner it goes. I put the body back on the frame and have a few loose ends (brakes and steering) to finish up and it will go to him this weekend. I am really excited about that, It will give me the opportunity to strip my garage and paint the floors and organize stuff again. It's been a while, and it will give me the opportunity to redo the seats, I got all the covers, foam, and hardware from Legendary interiors. I also will start cleaning up and polishing the stainless trim, and sending the rechroming I need to have done. Ill post pics from time to time whle hes got it. He has the doors, fenders, hood, and deck done so it should show some progress rather quickly I would think.

They do make a piece of the lower channel, it extendes into the dash to repair that also. It's called a dash repair or something like that. I bought one, it cost forty something dollars. I can post pics, it's not installed yet.

It says fits 64-67 Chevelle, it will also fit Pontiac A body.

I have one of those, and will give it to the body guy. I was able to save the channel intact on the dash that I put in, so hopefully he wont need it. What I have now is 1,000 times better than the 3 inches of bondo between the winshield and the dash in the beginning, but he will make that call.

They also have a panel that goes from the trunk lip to the rear window including the channel for the window. I believe our host PY can provide them as well.

Ok, Since there was a post about the nose piece and eyebrow moldings i took mine back from the body guy to check the fit. Figured while I had all the parts here, and just bought a buffer for trim, I would rebuild the grille section. I think it came out good. The sheet metal came from goodmark, the trim was original as were the grille meshs and turn signal lights. The surrounds were NOS I picked up on ebay $$$.

I will snap some pics next weekend when I go to the bodys guys place. He's making nice progress.

Glad to see that Goodmark makes a usable header panel. I shouldn't have tried to go cheep with that. I'm restoring an original tempest header panel now.
Keep it up old-goat, it does eventually come to an end! You look to be doing a great job and has I keep telling my wife, "it's all money in the bank"!

OK, lots of progress, and I have to take back all the good things I said about the Goodmark header panel. It fit the trim nice, and everything was fine until I tried to install it on the car. Seems it is about a half inch shorter (the distance from the area that the hood mates to and the area that accepts the eyebrow trim). It would have been too long (tight) a strech to get the mouldings in. We are going with the old header panel it fit perfectly, which I stripped this morning. I have attached some pictures and all the initial body work is done. We put it back together and the body guy is working on the fit (gap distances doors, hood, etc). I'm getting excited.

Sad to say this is really typical of a Fla car.
I say ours rust from the top down and Northern cars from the bottom up.
My 67 Sprint has some issues in the same spots altho not near as many or
as extreme.
Dont use another body,its borderline forgery.It will just come back to haunt you later.
You may want to try a local vo tech school to see if they need a "project".
Is hard to find anybody thats good at metal work these days.
Most new body men only use bondo and or replacement parts.

Well, most of the body work is complete, and we hung all the trim to make sure it fit. Next up will be fitting the trunk lid which will complete the body work. The trim looks good and all we are waiting for are the mirrors. The push now is to get it running so we can move it in and out of the paint booth. I can't wait to see some color on it.
