Question How Rare? 69' Custom 'S'

I tried a search on the forum and didn't come up with anything, so I was wondering if the experts here knew how rare (if at all) a 1969 Lemans Custom 'S' is. My dad bought one new when I was 9yrs. old, and I don't believe I've ever seen another. I believe they were a stripped down Lemans. It had a 350, auto on the column, Dk. Green with a white (cream?) vinyl top, brownish interior. I believe it was a front bench.
Anyhow, just going down memory lane and remembered this car.

Thanks for info!

I have a document on the production numbers and here is what it has for the Custom S if that will help.

Lemans (Custom) 1969 Model.
MDL UNITS
2Cp 7,912
4S 16,532
2H 46,886
4H 3,918
2C 2,379
2W 6,963
Total 84,590

I have one of the convertibles and I have not seen another one. From what I have learned they all came with a bench seat, auto on column.

I have other info on the car if you need any other info.

Today these cars are extremely rare. Most surviving cars have
been cut up to restore a GTO.

SurfNuke 9 it looks like 3,518 of the 68 Convert were made. Did you put your own top on?

Thanks,
David

They're rare, just like the OHC powered cars, because they've all been turned into clones.

They aren't popular yet, hopefully they'll be recognized soon.

Yeah, I put the top on last summer in my garage. Never did anything like that before but just dove in a figured it out.

I am not going to turn it into a clone, but am going to put the GTO hood on.

You gotta love those scoops. Still going to proudly wear the Tempest and custom badges though.

We had one when I was growing up - White, auto, bench, Blue Vinyl top, OHC 6. What was the breakdown between 350 vs. OHC 6?

DevoBuzz
I don't have any information showing the break down of what engines counts were. The 6 cyl 1 barrel carb was the standard engine with 3 upgrade options. The upgrades were 6 cyl 4 barrel carb, 350 V8 with 2 barrel carb - std fuel, 350 V8 with 4 barrel carb - prem fuel.

Mine was originally a 350 V8 with 2 barrel carb accoding to the documentation I have the upgrade pricing MSRP $110.59 costs $81.90.

Where did you get your top from? I believe I saw your post elsewhere that said you got a whole kit (i.e. tack strips, top, pads, cables).

My old high school friend had one then in convertible and he has it to this day but has since past it on to his son in the same exact color scheme. The car is stunning and was restored as to its former glory thirty years back in high school as a hot rod. He has the same ole hot 400 residing under the hood w/ original 350 badging. Car ran mid 13's in high school. His son takes really good care of it.

Did they really have a 6 cyl with a 4 barrel?

DevoBuzz - According the order sheet I have, the 4 bar. on a 6 cyl was an option.

Here's a picture (part of anyway) of me at 10 years old in front of our '69 Custom 'S'. I thought it was a dark, dark green, but this picture makes it look more brown. I'm pretty sure it was dark green though. Dig those redlines!

one of the 350 ho ragtops and John Sawruk claimed it to be one of the rarest Ponchos made. Still may know where the block is but car is long gone.

Custom S in 1969 had its own vin number starting 235 in the vin I believe. In 1968 you could get a tempest with custom s option, In 1969 it had its own vin class and in 1970 Lemans had the custom s option.

Custom s are the Rodney Dangerfield's of the Pontiac world. They get no respect. Same as a GTO only a little less power but the same old crappy brakes!

Half the people that see one think its a GTO.

So yea everyone clones them into a GTO. Thats what I plan to do. Clone it to a judge convertible. Just can't decide on putting in the 400 or the 455 into it! Then off to the track.

Ltl69GTO - the color looks like expresso brown. It's looks good in that picture with rally II's, redlines, and the vinyl top.

I had one its was antique gold with black interior 350 4bbl carb. Had absolutely no options. I bought it for a few hundred dollars. It was in a guys garage and was getting rid of it because his son was doing nothing with it. I beat the crap out of that car but never died. Had good power. I raced a late 70s corvette and I got pulled over for it. That wasnt fun. Cost me alot of money. It was painted dark purple with 3 stripes along the sides, red orange and yellow I believe but went the whole lenght of the car very 70ish. The body had no rust but the interior need work. I had to sell it due to having the first baby and the boss said she would not let the baby anywhere near it as it was my daily driver. So I sold it. But had a ton of fun.

My opinion, Leave a Custom S as it was made. They're a rare peice of history and most were killed for parts.

It's one car I'd like to own as a Sleeper. As it sits it's the lightest A body built in 69. Add the GTO stuff and you've slowed it down.

Mike
